Having four playoff spots going to each division is completely unfair to the teams in eight-team divisions. Why should the league be structured to make it statistically tougher for 16 of the 30 teams to make the playoffs?

I think they have to wait until the Phoenix situation is resolved before looking at any realignment opportunities. Cause if they realign the entire league, move a western conference team to the east and then the Coyotes wind up relocating somewhere in the east (like Quebec City or Southern Ontario) they're just gonna have to move that team back to the west, which wont go over too well.
Aligning the league with divisions of 8 and 7 in each conference also allows for easy expansion to 32 teams. I know a lot of people want to throw up at the thought of expansion but once the existing franchises are on solid financial ground it's bound to come up (although that might not EVER happen at this rate)
Would not want be in the division with southeastern teams, I don't want half our games to have no excitement behind them. Throw us in with MTL, BOS, TOR, PHI, PIT etc. Please keep us away from CAR, TB, FLA, NSH etc.

Yessssss. Multiple divisional games against southern teams would be hideous if FLA, TB or CAR were in our division. I like rangerjoe's distribution, although there still might be some franchises on the move. What happens if the Isles go to KC, or the Yotes go to Quebec, for example?
I'd also much rather take the top 3 teams from each division + 2 wild cards, and seed them 1 thru 8. Otherwise, you'll penalize the better divisions and/or the ones with 8 teams.
There is no way they are going 16-14, unless you send the top 16 overall to the playoffs regardless of conference. I don't see too many owners getting on board with that concept.
Detroit should stay out west, there is already 4 Original 6 teams here in the East. Historically, traditionally, rivalry... for a million reasons it would be a shame to leave Chicago out West alone and have all of the history in the East. Columbus needs to come out East to finally be relevant and compete.
They absolutely have to go back to naming the conferences and divisions after hockey icons. People don't not follow hockey because of odd division names. They watch it or they don't. Stop trying to be like the failing NBA. Stop trying to be like the NFL which we will never be. We are the direct opposite of Baseball, stop trying to mimic them.
You have to stick to the top 8 making the postseason. Top 4 by division is just going to foster the tanking mentality. Screw 32 teams. The talent is still too diluted.
as long as i dont have to stay up for any more 10pm starts and playoffs arent divisional based, im good
You will. Any realignment will include a balanced schedule. It's the only way sun belt teams like Phoenix, Anaheim and Nashville will give up dates with Detroit; by getting more games against marquee eastern teams.
They aren't going to put 4 Canadian teams in the same division. No way. It doesnt make sense from a revenue standpoint. You want to combine big and small market teams, so that in the inter-divisional games the fans of the big teams help fill the small market team's arena.
Combining big market canadian teams is a lost revenue opportunity.
they arent doing this with the sole intentions of putting WPG in the west and DET in the east, they would be dng it because there are SEVERAL teams that don't like the current alignment and also some who hate the larger amount of travel for them....Dallas is a perfect example...

Want to talk about stupid alignment and Dallas?
The NFL.
Why the **** are the Cowboys in the same division with the Giants, Eagles and Redskins?
Detroit should have ALWAYS been in the east. I know to balance things out years ago. But it always was weird about Detroit and dont forget Columbus. LOL
Why not just have two conferences without divisions?
The way the quote sounded to me, it almost sounds as if we're going towards a REALLY division heavy schedule. As in, home-and-home against every team in the league not in your division. 5 or 6 games against all teams in your division. It's an unbalanced schedule, but parity is so high in this league that I don't think it really matters that much. It's just a thought too.
I also have a strange alignment to put out there based on the division names Pacific, Midwest, South, East.
Pacific: PHX, LAK, ANA, SJS, COL, VAN, CGY, EDM
MidWest: STL, CHI, MIN, WPG, DET, CLB, BUF
South: DAL, NAS, FLA, TBL, CAR, WAS, PHI, PIT
East: NYR, NJD, NYI, BOS, MTL, TOR, OTT
Interesting to think about at least. The East is the only division not straddling one time zone. The only thing is that you'd be breaking up the Buffalo vs the current NorthEast and Philly/Pit vs the current Atlantic. That and 4 O6 in the same division.

I like this except move Phi and BUF to East, Tor or OTT to South and DAL to MidWest
