I predict Jason Deboer to be the new assist.

Unless the Habs miss the playoff, I don't see JM getting fired but let's say it happen, isnt it tempting to consider Muller as a head coach next year?

The Coach will always be Bilingual. I don't agree with it, but thats how it is.

Muller isn't completely inept in French, and it's not like he has to run practice in French, he just has answer a few mundane questions from media types every day.

He has a much better shot if he goes down to the AHL and runs his own bench for a year.

Another huge blow after having lost Boucher. But hey, we have Martin, right?

In the last couple of years, the Canadiens have turned into the old Senators. Gainey, Carbonneau and Muller, all former Habs, are gone. Replaced by Gauthier, Martin and what looks like Cunneyworth.

Not so sure I like that...

A strong rumor on CKAC something like 1 or 2 weeks ago was that Pete DeBoer was going to be the new assistant coach. The idea is that the coach needs to have full confidence in his guys and the connection he has with DeBoer and Pearn is clear.

Will probably one of the least lively coaching bench in the whole NHL....but we'll see how it turns out.

I think that's what this is about. Contrary to what people believe, the organization wants its young coaches to get promoted elsewhere, as that means the overall system is working. Muller missing out on 4 different jobs this off-season looks bad on the organization, so they feel that by allowing him to pursue a head coaching job outside of the NHL then it will further his development.

Cunneyworth will likely stay in Hamilton until an NHL head coaching position opens up.

Well I just heard the CTV Sports guy say Cunneyworth might become asst. behind Jacques and Pascal Vincent might take the spot in Hamilton.

Oh God I hope not.

I'm surprised. I thought/think he should be in the NHL. Sounded like he would be a notable choice for some head coach positions in the NHL.

Tempting perhaps, but probably ill-advised. Former assistants coaching their team to my understanding hasn't been very successful. The two examples that come off the top of my head are Lewis in Detroit, and MacLean in New Jersey. Two obvious disasters. Usually when an assistant gets hired it is to another team, such as McLelland to San Jose, or Paul MacLean to Ottawa.

Yeah, there's connections galore with Deboer.

I'd also be interested to see a list of martin's assistant coaches in his head coaching career (going about a decade back).

If we get DeBoer.. will there be a lick of personality or energy behind the benches? How will the guys get pumped up?

They probably have some really good locker room guys, the team seems like a real family at times. (Just basing it off interviews etc)

Don't be fooled by what you saw on camera. At least here in Kitchener, DeBoer was one of the most intense/intimidating figures in the game. He had a mastery over his young charges that I have never seen before. They worked their butts off EVERY game and any issues were dealt with quickly, fairly and privately. I have never seen a better junior coach in my 30 years of following it.

Now, I know the NHL is a different ball game. Big contracts, less coach control, etc. But I do know DeBoer is a master tactician. In the 2008 OHL playoffs he out-coached Hartsburg so badly with in-game adjustments, matching and tweaks that I almost threw a white towel on the ice to spare the carnage.

What I'm saying is that I think DeBoer is an awesome hockey man who was somewhat hosed by a pathetic roster in Florida and we'd be lucky to have him.

Having said that, the strongest rumours I hear are that he'll sign on as an assistant with Detroit. And he has strong connections to that organization from years back, so it makes sense. He and Babcock would be a match made in heaven.
