Simon Gagne

2009-10 PHI 58 17 23 40 -1 47 38 26 5 14 0 0 4 183 .093
2010-11 TB 63 17 23 40 -12 20 49 20 7 8 0 0 3 154 .110

Very similar statistics between last year with the Flyers and first year with TB.
What do you guys think? Is our team better after trading him or worst looking back?

I think we should sign him.

He bleeds orange and black and everyone knows it. Having him on the team is exactly what this organization needs after loosing Richie and Carter.

It would be cool to have him back but I don't think it would happen

I'd be shocked if Gagne resigned with us, given how he was traded and the questions about loyalty brought up by the past few days.

We could definitely use him now with Richards and Carter gone.

It would definitely lighten things up in Philly that's for sure.

As long as he doesn't end up in Pittsburgh, I'm fine.

Yep. I'd be really surprised if he comes to Philly over LA.

Didn't he not want to be traded to LA last year? The Flyers got a better deal for him from LA but Gagne wanted to stay on the East coast in a palce where he'd be able to resign.

Yeah, from what I know his wife doesn't want to live on the West Coast.

I'd think we'd be somewhere he'd be interested in going, but there would probably be other teams that he would have interest in as well. I think TB is most likely where he'll end up, unless they don't try to bring him back.

1.) I believe it was one of the teams he approved a trade to in the West.

2.) Lot's of former Flyers guys there, not just players.

3.) LA now has a void and cap space with the trade of Smyth.

It just seems like a 'perfect' fit.

I remember when I was a kid the primary criticism of Gagne was that he was dispassionate. Wasn't there some drama where Clarke accused him of being a soft frenchman and lambasted him for refusing to accept the team captaincy?

I think because he was a stoic guy who played hard, that label eventually went away as he became an elder statesman on the team.

Yeah, there were tons of rumors going around[I don't have the links right now], about Gagne's wife wanting to stay East, which is why he was never dealt to LA.

does anyone think that there's a possibility that he only agreed to be traded, to be re-signed after his contract was up?

i mean, he never sold his house...

Yup, I wonder about this as well. He only agreed to go to one team last year and that was TB. Now he's telling them he won't be back so maybe he'll come back to Philly.

I'd be one happy ****ing camper. Seriously, if Gagne came back, I'd probably forget the Richards/Carter stuff happened because I'd be so happy to see him back in a Flyers uniform. Imagine the ovation he would receive in the first game back home in Philly in a Flyers uniform.

I'll just do a capgeek thing for if Gagne goes for 3M:

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Kris Versteeg ($3.083m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jakub Voracek ($2.250m)
Simon Gagne ($3.000m) / Brayden Schenn ($3.110m) / Wayne Simmonds ($1.750m)
Darroll Powe ($0.800m) / Blair Betts ($0.700m) / Andreas Nodl ($0.900m)
Jody Shelley ($1.100m)

DEFENSEMEN
Chris Pronger ($4.921m) / Matt Carle ($3.437m)
Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m) / Braydon Coburn ($3.200m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m)
Oskars Bartulis ($0.600m)

GOALTENDERS
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.666m) / Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,606,428; BONUSES: $3,815,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $693,572

For some reason, that Gagne-Schenn-Simmonds reminds me of the Gagne-Richards-Knuble line we had a while ago.

I have my doubts he signs here, but that is a pretty stacked lineup. Weak 6th defender and 4th line, but so be it.

Betts had a screwed up thumb remember? I'm sure that prevented him from doing a lot of what he could, such as pushing people and doing better on the faceoffs. Honestly, I don't think the 4th line is weak, it's just an energy line, with 3 semi to full defensive forwards. Powe and Nodl do play bigger than their size. And for the #6 d-man thing, we don't need 6 top-4 d-men. We can have a weaker #6 (not a bad #6) because of the goalie we have behind them now. Gustafsson and Bartulis fighting for the spot should be fine.
