Josh Archibald | Winger | Brainerd H.S. (MN) | Sixth Round, 174th overall

Chuck Grillo at work.

Name: Josh Archibald
Selection: Sixth Round (174th overall)
Position: F
Height: 5-10
Weight: 161
Amateur Team: Brainerd (Minnesota High School)

Note: A 5-10, 165-pound forward from Brainerd High School in Brainerd, MN. Archibald, 18, was a finalist for the state of Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey award after notching 27 goals, 46 assists and 73 points in 25 games for Brainerd. The Regina, SK product was the captain this past season for Brainerd – which is the same high school Penguins prospect Carl Sneep attended. Archibald will attend the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the fall. His father, Jim, was drafted by Minnesota in the seventh round (139th overall) of the 1981 Draft and appeared in 16 NHL games for the North Stars.

Sexton’s Take: “Very good speed, physical, aggressive. He put up good numbers in the Minnesota High School league."

Star in the making!

I told you guys this draft class sucks / is completely underwhelming. I'm no expert but all the original rumblings about a weak draft are clearly true. The quality of guys we're seeing (our scouts aren't dumb) pretty much bears it out. Don't get too freaked out about it. Odds are after round two anyone we pick is about a 50:1 shot to make the team one day.

5'10 170lbs

Josh Archibald is a leading candidate for Mr Hockey.

He is the Warrior team Captain and is definetly the team leader. He centers the top line for the Warriors. Josh as well is a leader off the rink as well, where he is active in school and holds a 3.4 GPA.

He volunteers in the communtiy with MS Bikathon and the Brainerd Amatuer Hockey Association, help other youth develop skills. Josh has also been involved with Meals on Wheels in the community.

He currently leads the state AA with most points, and assists.

Josh has made a committment to attend University of Nebraska Omaha where he will be playing next year.

For sure.

Without even knowing who this kid is, seems like a perfect type of late round pick- find an under-scouted young guy that one of your staff knows closely. And then hope for the best.

Yup... as I suspected. This is a "character pick" (probably same with the last guy). They're just taking a long-shot that a kid who is displaying good skill at his level, leadership and perhaps a lot more maturity than his classmates... hoping he'll continue that trend in college and be able to make the jump after he graduates.

You mean Skipbo.

HEY! Eureka! We'll call this guy "Uno" and the 7th rounder we just got "Skipbo" (since it might've behooved us to skip the round all together). Perfect.

Makes me think of Dave Archibald. I think he was rated 40 or something in NHL 94. Those games back then weren't as generous as they are now, where you've got career minor leaguers rated 75.

Sounds like a kid who's a big gamble but well worth the risk, especially for a 6th round pick. Can't really complain.

Saw him play as a jr in HS...wasn't his best game but you could see he loves the game and gives it an honest effort night in and night out.

Nah man it's all about Gaear Grimsrud. Best player who smokes since Zubov while giving us a Euro pick.
