The idea is he wouldn't ever play.

He'd be due $5M in real dollars, of which insurance covers $4M. So you'd pay him $1M and he'd fill $7M of cap space for 1 year. A perfect scenario for a team that might be close to the floor

You do realize Campbell can still play right? Big difference between the two.

If Drury is to be bought out, doesn't need to happen by thursday? There another opening in August if someone files for Arbitration, but that doesn't help free agency.

Even if the Rangers don't buyout Drury, they have at least $10m under the summer cap to pursue UFAs (after factoring in the cost to re-sign their RFAs . . .if they forestall signing their RFAs, which Glen Sather suggested as a possibility after the draft yesterday, then they could go even higher). Their holes are a top 6 center, a 3rd line LW, and possibly a #6-#7 defenseman (personally I think Valentenko should get the spot but they could bring back Eminger). Fedotenko is rumored to be the UFA to fill the LW spot, and he earned $1m last year. I'd guess he signs for between $1-1.5m, leaving the Rangers plenty of room to pursue Richards under the summer cap even if Drury is not bought out.

Looks like my assessment of the Rangers free agent pursuits were correct:

Quote:
Depending what the final numbers are on the new contracts of restricted free agents Artem Anisimov, Brian Boyle, Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky and Michael Sauer, the Rangers figure to have room for Richards, sparkplug veteran winger Ruslan Fedotenko and one or two other additions, one of which Sather said on Saturday could be a defenseman.

Actually, you're underestimating the Rangers' summer cap space significantly (note, players on 2-way deals that did not play in the NHL last year do not count against the cap).

The proper summer cap calculations are below:

If Chris Drury is NOT bought out:

Quote:
CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Marian Gaborik ($7.500m) / Chris Drury ($7.050m) / Wojtek Wolski ($3.800m)
Sean Avery ($1.937m) / Brandon Prust ($0.800m) / Erik Christensen ($0.925m)
Derek Stepan ($0.875m) / Evgeny Grachev ($0.070m) / Mats Zuccarello ($0.940m)
/ Kris Newbury ($0.093m)

DEFENSEMEN
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Daniel Girardi ($3.325m)
Wade Redden ($6.500m) / Ryan McDonagh ($0.684m)
Michael DelZotto ($0.689m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Martin Biron ($0.875m) / Cam Talbot ($0.004m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,730,000; CAP PAYROLL: $46,851,998; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (18-man roster): $23,878,002
If Chris Drury IS bought out:

FORWARDS
Marian Gaborik ($7.500m) / Chris Drury ($3.717m BUYOUT HIT) / Wojtek Wolski ($3.800m)
Sean Avery ($1.937m) / Brandon Prust ($0.800m) / Erik Christensen ($0.925m)
Derek Stepan ($0.875m) / Evgeny Grachev ($0.070m) / Mats Zuccarello ($0.940m)
/ Kris Newbury ($0.093m)

DEFENSEMEN
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Daniel Girardi ($3.325m)
Wade Redden ($6.500m) / Ryan McDonagh ($0.684m)
Michael DelZotto ($0.689m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Martin Biron ($0.875m) / Cam Talbot ($0.004m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,730,000; CAP PAYROLL: $43,518,665; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (18-man roster): $27,211,335
Unsigned RFAs (estimated salary):
Dubinsky (~$4m)
Callahan (~$4m)
Anisimov (~$2m)
Boyle (~$1.5m)
Sauer (~$1.5m)

Potential holes to be filled via UFA:
Top 6 Center
2nd/3rd line LW (rumored to be Fedotenko, who earned $1m last year)
6th/7th Defenseman (not needed if you give Valentenko the 7th spot, which would leave you with Staal, Girardi, McDonagh, Sauer, Del Zotto, Erixon, Valentenko)

EDIT: Which leaves you with approximately $10m if Drury is not bought out, or $13.3m if Drury is bought out, to spend on UFAs as you deem appropriate.

How does that paint Drury in a bad light? He's entitled to that money. If the Rangers didn't want to pay it, they shouldn't have offered him that contract. The end.

If anything watching the Rangers trying to squirm their way out of yet another ridiculous contract should paint them in a negative light and give caution to future free agents looking to sign there. It won't, but that's neither here nor there.

Qualifying offers count against the cap while they're still active. Our QO's equal $6,140,249, which would bring down your $23M cap hit to about $20M. I also counted all the two-way contracts that played.

True, but I was assuming that you plan to sign the RFAs before camp, and as such, will need to fit their full caps under the summer hit.

In the case of Dubinsky, Callahan, and Boyle, you will almost certainly need to sign them during the summer rather than at camp, due to arbitration.

This is exactly what the scrapping of Drury and Redden and dishing off of Gomez is intended to do. Earn your money or GTFO - and if Richards or anyone else is scared of the level of accountability then he should stay away from NY.

I love the massive culture change in NY and part of that is punishing guys who are eager to demand the big payout but can't or won't put in the effort to earn it.

Yeah I'm sure Redden, Drury, Gomez and the rest all had a gun to Sather's head on July 1st.
