Location: I ated the purple berries, they taste like burning
I now live very close to where Shane McColgan grew up.
His father and uncle own a few bars in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. I've never met his father (Shane), but I've been talking to his uncle about this kid for two years now.
The skinny: he's closer to 5'8" than 5'11" in person. I'm 5'11" and the kid is significantly shorter than me. He translates to a Theo Fluery type of kid if he develops. I don't think his size is as big an issue as most people would believe. He's pretty solidly built (his uncle by the way is almost square) despite the fact that he's pretty short.
Good family, solid kid. He should be a nice agitator with enough offensive upside to sneak his way on to a second line if he develops. Even if he doesn't develop, he could still be a nice lower line kid who's tough to play against.
Well, this pick is both surprising and amazing at the same time. I followed the draft news since last year September and remember him being right up there with RNH for the top picks. The fact he was drafted in round 5 is a massive surprise of course, despite his bad run recently.
The funny thing is that I was talking to a friend of mine about Shane McColgan 6 months ago, saying I would like to see him being drafted by us. At 1 stage the McColgan story got so out of hand, we were actually tracking he every move, even drafting him in NHL 11 on the PS3 and playing with him in the Rangers team.
Last weekend we were following the draft and when we heard McColgan got drafted, we were just confused. We thought we didn't hear it right. Shane McColgan, drafted by the Rangers. Man...
Let's see what he can do for us. I like our drafts this year and we finally seem to get rid of that image of Galactico's (freaking expensive players, never winning anything) We have been the NHL's Real Madrid for too long
