Pretty much! Maybe he's only clear on the cap hit so wants to be a little open ended on term, but yes, strange way to say it.

Just don't give him the dreaded NTC/NMC.

With a NTC and discount to play here, I want him for 4 - 4.2 tops.

Well, $4.5 million is really the most I would want to pay him, so I guess I can't really complain as it's within the range I suspected. That being said, I'm not particularly excited by the number either. I can't believe there are apparently teams out there who would give the guy MORE then that, but I suppose there are some desperate teams that need defensemen and have a bunch of cap space.

Depends what you're looking for. I'm sure there were more than a few teams with a good stay-at-home defenseman thinking, Huh, if I can signed Kevin Bieksa, our stay-at-home pair just got a whole lot better.

Plus the cap went up by almost 10%.

Hope he comes in at 4.2 -4.4, but if its a little higher then whatever, I'll get over it.
You also have to account for the fact Dan Hamhuis has been head and shoulders better than Kevin Bieksa over the last 3-4 years when you look at their entire body of work. Hamhuis' year in, year out consistency has to be worth something.

Bieksa at the top of his game is comparable to Hamhuis. Bieksa struggling is more comparable to Marc-Andre Bergeron.

I would sacrifice Edler for Weber, without hesitation. I love Edler but at this point in their careers, Weber is the better player. And we're talking about two players who are only 8 months apart in age.

Bieksa struggling was more to do with him having his calf cut open by a skate. In years that this hasn't happened, he's been one of our best defensemen.

Other than the fact he should be worth less than Hamhuis - even accounting for the cap going up.

To be far, $4.5 million is right around 7% of the cap. When Bieksa signed his $3.75 million deal in 07 the cap was $50.3 and his salary was 7.5% of the cap. In terms of percentage of cap hit, Bieksa is actually going to be making less than when he signed his last deal.

Those people were wrong though. Has a fanbase never been wrong about a player before?

it does add up though, but only if we end up slightly overpaying other players too

I'd guess 4.25 mil over 5 years. This is great news for the Canucks, it will be great to have both him and Hammer together long term

He stunk badly for a number of months just before his first major leg injury - worst on the blueline.

Well looks like Bieksa got the 5th year. According to HW, the 5th year was one of the hold ups. She also states the cap hit will be just under 4.5M per year.

Ok that's how I'm going to look at it, to keep myself from getting back up on the ledge.

It definately had a big effect on him and I'd like to believe that was the main reason for his struggles but he also has had stretches of inconsistency before those injuries.

I just hope Gillis gave him self the flexibility to move Bieksa if things aren't working out. We can't afford to be saddles with the 'bad Bieksa' at $4.5mil longterm.

Yes

With the increase in cap limit salaries will edge up. Hamhuis signed under a different cap regime and his salary cannot realistically be used as the standard for on-going negotiations under the new cap limit. With the raise in the cap, Hamhuis salary will look an increasingly unique home town discount and an unbelieveable bargain

Given Bieksa's play last year and the state of the market a price tag of 4.7 (if this is the deal) is fine.

I had always marked in a combined salary of something b/w 10.5 and 11 for Ehrhoff and Bieksa.

Hopefully Ehrhoff now gets signed in the range I was hoping and then we dump Ballard and have we have plenty of cap room left to make other moves.

Getting Bieksa below anything below 5 is a coup given his open market contract potential.

This is pretty much how I feel. I love his attitude and he's obviously a great teammate...but everyone had better hope he continues to play a good shut down role beside Hamhuis and doesn't revert back to the play of some previous years.
