Pyatt's efficacy clearing the puck will be missed.
His board play was among the worst in the league. I remember them showing a video on TSN of the coaches trying to improve him at that aspect. He just didn't seem to get it.
Hopefully we get someone with Size who can wear down the top lines.

His board play in the offensive zone wasn't great, I admit that. I don't think that's the case in the defensive zone because he was usually the one getting the puck out.

Didn't usually get to the boards. He was usually really good at reading the plays and breaking them up. I'll give him that. We need a defensive specialist with size who can wear down other lines. A guy who's harder to move than Pyatt and can waste more time/generate more scoring chances in the offensive zone.
Plekanec and Moen were better I think. Still I liked him as a minimum wage 13/14th forward and PK specialist. Then again, if a Halpern can be found for 0.6 million then there isn't much point in giving the same to Pyatt.

I liked Pyatt. No he didn't score much. No he isn't big, strong nor gritty. But he was great defensively. Great at shutting down opponents. I still remember him playing against Ovechkin/Crosby caliber players and playing very well against them. He's also a workhorse, isn't scared of taking a hit and has a good vision on the game. Yes, all he's missing is his scoring. Which for many is what forwards are only for. But he isn't playing top 2 lines, heck we rarely see him on the third line. Basically, he needs to gain a bit of weight and get his offense going. Other than that, he's a good player.
I hope we do re-sign him. Won't cost us much anyways.

great attitude, very good on the PK, no apparent negative reaction to yo-yoing btw press box and playing, dirt cheap...
all attributes that, imo, made him a useful 4th line/13th fwd.
I wonder if he wasn't qualified, but the team has indicated to him that they want him back on a cheaper/ 2-way deal?
if he does leave the organization, i wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see him surface with another team in the same role he played for us.
I just PRAY that we don't end up going into the season using Weber as the 13th fwd, or promoting a guy like Palushaj only to slot him into that role.
lmao at the Gomez trade fans who repeatidly tried to use Pyatt as an asset that made the deal that much better for us... he was a throw in then, and apparently hasn't progressed beyond that in managements eyes.

lol that's highly risky, they could have given him a QO, negotiated for weeks leading up to arbitration and potentially walked away from the decision if the arbitrator gave him too much.

Because he's not a very good player and they're willing to take that (minimal) risk.
Love the idea that losing a throw-in that became a fringe NHL player now makes the Gomez trade bad. It was a pleasant surprise that Pyatt played at the NHL level at all for us.
Yes, that trade was disappointing but it was made to give us a first line centre. Does anyone still think Gomez is a first line centre? No, but regardless, that was the intention. Now that Pyatt is perhaps on his way out it doesn't mean the trade was bad. The trade was bad because Gomez isn't a number one centre.
Also, getting 2 years of service out of guy like Pyatt is worth something. Probably about what Higgins was worth to NY. Busto's value is probably close to Valentenko's.
So it's really just become McDonagh for Gomez. Tough one. But probably a chance a lot of GMs with cap space might have made with Gomez only a year removed from a 70pt season.

I can't believe they are not tendering Pouliot... unless perhaps I'm missing something, this means he can become a UFA on July 1st.
if so, what a complete cluster**** yet again from this management team. As low as Pouliot's value may be today, I can't believe for one second that at no point this year there wasn't at least 1 team willing/able to throw a late pick at us for him.
given the way Martin was using him all year, it was obvious that he wasn't going to get a decent shot at developing some confidence, so why the hell hang on to him this long?
CBJ trading filatov for a 3rd had to hurt, but listening to Howson at least you see some rational/long-term planning... the kid didn't fit into their plans, was not going to get the shot he wanted/needed, so they swallowed their pride and got something for him instead of losing him for nothing.
losing Pouliot for nothing is yet another example of the god-awful asset management that has plagued this organization under Gainey, and now gauthier... it's ridiculous.
I hope, REALLY REALLY hope, that I am missing some huge piece that will make this make sense... but if all they got is "we didn't want to pay him and preferred having the cap space", then they are deserving of abundant criticism for repeatidly making the same bloody mistake.
someone has to get into Gainey/Gauthier's head and make them understand that managing a team in a cap era means you MUST make the most of ALL assets, the way they operate so carelessly with young players (while waisting further assets to add 1 & done vets who give us marginal contributions at best) is absolutely mind-boggling.
Why this hype about his defensive skills and JM's affection for him? How many first, second, or third stars did Pyatt amass in his two seasons with the Habs? How many Selke nominations did he receive? Let's see whether another NHL team signs him (that is, to play at the NHL level). I predict there won't be any. I can't recall seeing Tom Pyatt clones on the SC finalists. The Habs will try to replace him with someone who knows how to use his stick in the offensive zone without getting swatted away like a fly.
