I think (or hope) they are saying he's not worth $1.5M - and that they are still going to try to sign him.

I hope for the club's sake that we have equal or better two-players with as high a responsibility ratio ready to step in.
Lapierre and Pyatt

Also, by the way, he was awarded 2.75 not 4.

They didn't qualify him because, I think if they did, he could file for arbitration (which he'd win). We will have to hunt down the rules for that.
Definitely sounds logical. Instead of simply refusing the arbitration reward if it's too high, they'd rather just not take any chance and let him go, because...?

Naw, we'll blame Zdeno Chara's monster hit.

Although i agree that Martin has a short leash with younger players, i don't think he's entirely the problem.
White, Eller, Weber have proven nothing so far. And Max Pax pretty much became the player he is because he found his game in Hamilton. DD is a little fighter and got everything on his own everywhere he went. As for PK well he's a uber talented guy who almost was NHL ready the moment he joined the Habs, he's a rare talent. Sure Martin did well with him but that's the thing: Martin can coach guys that are NHL ready, you gave them a little tough love and send them on the ice but he can't groom guys into becoming hockey players by fixing their problems.
