Mez still has brainfarts with the puck, which his biggest flaw right now I think.

Agreed. Such a beast though, and he is still fairly young... has not reached his ceiling yet imo.

Andrej ****in' Meszaros.

Andrej is good. Maybe not Marc Staal good, but I feel like he grew alot last season with us. I think he got a major boost of confidence being able to play against opponents secondary and tertiary scoring lines. When Pronger went down he was called on to fill that void and I thought he did well despite our W% during that stretch of time. As of now, in my mind at least, he is 3rd on the depth chart; right behind Pronger and Timonen. He could get worse in two years time or he could get better. Will he be good enough to step in as a top 2 defensemen by then... "Who the heck knows?"

Not the best on the team, not better than Marc Staal, and I haven't seen Brett Burns enough to comment.

Is your friend wealthy? I would like to make some wagers with him...

If Schenn is on the NHL roster within the first 15 games of the year, this year counts. If not, the bet starts next year and gets pushed back to 2012/13, 2013/14, or 2014/15.
You shouldn't take advantage of small children or insane people. I figure this friend of yours falls into one of those two categories.

meszaros is one of those guys who has the talent and ability to be a top pairing defenseman, however for one reason or another he only plays that well when he's NOT a top pairing defenseman. He went to tampa and was expected to be a top pairing defenseman and he had a couple down seasons, which is the reason we were able to get him for next to nothing. When he came here, he didn't have to be the guy, and he bounced back in a big way and had a very solid season. So in terms of talent and playing his position, he's probably on par with a guy like Marc Staal. However, i don't think he has the 'it' factor that Staal possesses that gives him the shut-down capabilities of holding down a top pairing.

3. Andrej Mezsaros is better than Marc Staal.

Your friend is a huge homer drinking oragne coolade.

Staal >>>> Mesz
Burns >>>> Mesz.

Right now, Pronger>Timonen?Carle>Coburn>Meszaros. Mesz was actually our 5th bestdman last year. He did a great job playing on the bottom pairing against the other teams 4th line but that's about it. He showed great promise last season and grew a lot (actually, just rebounded from 2 bad seasons in a row) and does still have the ability to become a legit top pairing, #2 dman in the NHL. however, right now he's not there. He's a legit #4 dman and is growing. Right now he's still behind Carle and Coburn but if we dealt Carle then I'd be more than comfortable sliding Mesz into his slot along side Pronger. However, having said that, Staal and Burns are still better than Mesz even if he reaches his full potential.

Can we please have Staal for Mesz??? PLEASE. PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP??? I asked nicely.

In three years you won't even remember making a bet about a hockey player's statistics.

And yeah, Mez is an okay defenseman, but I highly doubt he'll be the top pairing guy someday like a lot of people hope. At least he's better than Matt Carle.

Mez may be better overall than Staal. Staal is very good at shutting people down, He is tall , lanky and has great range, but he is not a physical presence. Staal is absolutely horrible on offense though. Mez does everything well, nothing great, although he is way more physical than Staal. Mez was bar none our best defender this year in my opinion. I dont know if he looked good cause he was a third paring guy, but he is someone who i was impressed with all season.

I do take issue with ranking Mesz behind Carle and even Coburn. For one thing, Mesz did well this PO. For another he is way more physical than either (Coburn has the size and ability to be tough but doesnt seem to be able to play that way, while Carle does not have that size or ability).

Philly's defense is in a world of trouble, with an ageing Prongs and Timo and no one coming up good enough to replace them.

Once Kimmo retires he will free up enough room to sign/trade for a top D.
