Wow...that's a big contract. It's not totally unreasonable but let's say Laich did hit free agency...would you sign him for 6 years and 4.5 per? Not so sure I would.
Really hoping we can land Gagne.
Supply and demand. With nobody on the market, he was always going to be overpaid. I expected him to get $4.5-5m on the open market, which meant we would have had to pay $5.5m to get him.
Is there a very real possibility that we end up with lots of cap room this year? I could see us with $4M + of cap space.
I see us signing Weber for $500K, Hamrlik for $3M maximum (hopefully less), Gorges for $2.75M and a backup for less than $1M.
That is about $8M remaining to sign White for $500K and a free agent forward, maybe two.
Other than Richards, I don't see anyone deserving more than $4M as a free agent. Seems like he is going to NY though.
If I were PG I would go hard after Jagr, give him 2.5 to 3M and then try to get Cole, Gagne, Leino or Fleishmann to fill in the other top 9 position.
But if we don't get two of those guys we could definitely see Montreal spending below the cap this season. Which if that is the case, I hope we get Subban and Price locked up long term a a decreased cap hit during the season.

Weber IMO will be making a bit more then that, I don't see Hamrlik coming back unless Spacek is gone. There will be money available that's for sure but the market isn't that great. Maybe Gauthier goes the trade route

He was basically Gomez 2.0 if we ever got him.
I agree 100%, him and his agent knew they had the Caps over a barrell and got paid for it. It's an expensive contract but it's not really a surprise.
At this point, the one other player I do not want is Leino. I'd much rather take a Gagne, heck I'd take Antropov over Leino. I do not want Leino for the money he will command.
I would like Gagne here but can he still stay healthy for a entire season with PO? He has had concussion, groin, shoulder and foot problem.....but the guy has talent and has proven wen healthy, he produces.

no way to gagne. Dude is an accident waiting to happen.
I don't think you can afford to be too picky with this UFA crop. Because of his injuries, he'd come cheaper than some other options, but he has the potential to be better than any of them if the planets align.
He can play on any line and in any situation, has lots of experience, he's a leader...there's a lot to like IMO.

I didn't see Hamrlik coming back either but reports are saying he has an offer from us that is "interesting"
Hammer as a 5-6 d-man and Spacek sitting in the press box could happen.
With Laich off the market, and I'm glad the Habs didn't have a chance to offer that $27M/6yr contract!, the last UFA I can see that would be a really good fit in our top 9 is Erik Cole. Here's hoping we can still snag him!
Also, if we do have the money to do so, I would much rather spend $4-5M on Wizniewski than $2-3M on Hamrlik. Either way, if one of those two is signed, I'd like to be rid of Spacek, as I only really want one of those three hanging around.
Not saying NJ would do that but how would you feel about the following deal?
To MTL :
Zach Parise
To NJD :
Lars Eller
Yannick Weber
2012 1st round pick
2013 1st round pick
That would turn the NJD into a cap floor team. They'd have $12+m in cap space and no where to spend it. They are better off offering Parise $6m for like 8 years at this point.
With the wealth of long term contracts given out, and the sheer lenght of some of the terms, and this became inevitable. Some years'll get better because of a bigger margin of RFAs, but weaker UFA markets is gonna become the norm.
Not that I want him but Pascal Dupuis has apparently re-signed with Pittsburgh.
As for people saying that we need two top 9 forwards, I'm quite sure that DD will be used as a winger this year and he will play on the 3rd line. If that's the case, we need one top 6 forward and not two top 9 forwards.
