Grahame cracks under the pressure I bet. He'll let in goals soft as marshmallows on the first shot every game. That smore then he can handle.

Then it will be his fault.

Varlamov has been rumored to be available; Dmitry Chesnokov is pretty much THE source for anything NHL/Russian and he's made a few comments about it.

Exactly. In fact, it would be everyone except the goalie's fault. Where was the D on all those empty net goals? Buncha scrubs...

Varlamov is last on the list of Caps goalie they could be interested in, and probably last on the list of goalies avaliable because of their history with Russians.

Empty net for 55minutes and fill in the goalie spot to prevent the score from getting too lopsided.

Epic strategy for tanking and getting first overall pick.

The last one they drafted (Parishin) didn't want to come to Denver, and since then all Russians are considered dead to Pierre Lacroix (Shermans boss).

Colorado just never liked gambling with Russians. Kamensky and Gusarov were notable exceptions, but Colorado management has always taken the position that it's better to take in a North American player over a slightly more skilled European, just to save themselves the potential headache of the person leaving the Avs high and dry by going back to their home country if things don't progress smoothly.

I should mention I've never seen an official statement to that effect, but given that the Avalanche have not had a Russian on their roster since Nikolishin in 03-04 (who was actually a success as a 4th line center) and haven't had one in a prominent role since Gusarov in the early part of the 00-01 season, I think it's safe to say that management just isn't big on Russians.

There are quite a few good options out there for the Aves. Emery could be had for a reasonable price. He has yet to show he can handle a full season but he's solid none the less. Vokoun of course. I wouldn't put a blind eye towards Giguere either, he could be a very solid #2 for a reasonable price. The Aves also have alot of valuable assets to work with. I'm still baffled by the Elliot - Anderson straight up trade, but I wouldn't worry much about bringing in a starter. I'd make a push for Lindback. Emery/Lindback sharing the load 50/50 wouldn't be too shabby. Emery is also a playoff proven keeper.

They knew he wasn't going to re-sign so they traded him to get something rather than nothing. I think they were gambling that Elliott would become a starter. Didn't work out but they wouldn't have Andy next year either way so it was a pretty low risk gamble.

Avs should go after: Vokoun or Giguere

If that fails trade for Nabokov (he'll be cheap & looking to prove himself)

If they're going to work in all the young guys on defense, it makes sense to go spend huge on a goalie like Vokoun who can act as a stabilizing force as they adjust to the speed of the NHL game.

The Kings currently have Quick, Bernier, Jones, Zatkoff, Berube and Gibson.

Quick is a #1, Bernier should be a #1, Jones will be at least a backup, Zatkoff could be a call up someday but not in LA, Berube could be a backup, and Gibson has the potential to be a #1. I still think Colorado goes after Bernier.

It's UFA goalie or 1st overall! Oh wait, same situation as when we thought Elliot was going to be re-signed.
Well technically Grahame is a UFA goalie.

How about we sign Vokoun and Giguere as backup.

He'll go whether he likes it or not if he ever wants to work in this country again.

The price for Varly is not nearly as high as people think.

Yeah but any reasonable pro scout could have told you Brian Elliot wasn't very good. I was surprised, not that they dealt Anderson, but that they dealt him for Elliot alone. Should have gotten a pick...

Maybe it's not that easy to get a pick these days, especially the first 3 rounds.

The thing is, you have to think that the #11 pick was something the Avs were trying to use as a significant piece in any Bernier/Schneider scenario. Since a deal didn't get done at the draft, I highly doubt it happens at this point. Maybe they'll be forced to look at it if they completely strike out in the FA market, but they really don't have the roster depth to trade straight-up for Bernier (or Schneider) without opening up other holes - possibly significant ones.
It really does look like the Avs are going to make a serious pitch for Vokoun, and hope that he carries them through until Pickard can be evaluated. If they don't get Vokoun, it could be another long season.

You could send us a first for bobrovsky. Or a sound defensive prospect.

Anderson was signed without giving up any assets, and he left without returning any assets. If avs sign vokoun it'll basically be like an anderson for vokoun swap and that is big win for the avs.

Except Landeskog will probably play with Stastny, since he isn't the type of player Dutchy works well with (ie Stew, Jones).

Hishon - Dutchy - Yakupov
Landeskog - Stastny - Jones
Galiardi - RoR - Malone

Now those lines would be sick as our top 3 lines, you have a flashy, extremely skilled 1st line, 2nd line that punishes you physically, and plays the cycle game, and a 3rd shut down line that can chip in ofensivly.
