surprised about Sweatt. this organization can't have too much depth on the blueline, and I thought he acquitted himself decently for his first season back in NA.

Hope Shirokov is still in the fold. imo he's our best bet to provide a cheap contract in the top 6, at least until Raymond comes back. if nothing else you'd think we could sign him and then deal him in September or October for at least a 6th round pick.

Is it possible that Shirokov has let them know that he's decided, or wants to go home and to go play in the KHL and he has the Canucks blessing?

His cap hit was $1.3mm, but that included both performance and signing bonuses; QOs are based on paragraph 1 salary (ex performance and signing bonuses).

Shirokov was shown no love by the Canucks.

I hope he, like Grabner, is able to thrive in a new environment.

Didn't Shirokov leave on poor terms? I'm not sure if he'd be welcomed back into the KHL.

everything Shirokov has said in the press indicates he wants to make it work in NA.

Yeah I remember that. But two years far away from home and seemingly still far away from the NHL can change a lot of things for a guy.

But what CF94 said rings a bell too.

Maybe the KHL is not an option for him. Prolly why he said all those nice things about Winnipeg in the first place.

Not qualifying Shirokov is inexcusable. Awful, awful asset management.

Even if they didn't qualify Shirokov (which is STILL unconfirmed), they still might sign him to a contract. They could be looking to have him sign a cheaper NHL contract with a bigger salary in the AHL or something like that, that way he would be more likely to get called up even if we are in cap trouble or whatever.

Ah, there's the voice of reason. I never thought of that.

Any word on whether Gillis has extended an offer to one Tanner Glass?

Still nothing officially saying Shirokov wasn't qualified.

A little surprised Lee Sweatt was cut loose. Yes we got some good defenders who will suit up in Chicago next year in the likes of Erixon and Tommernes, but at the least Sweatt was an asset who could have been dealt to another organization. Odd.

Shirokov will never make the Canucks. I always laugh at the lineups people make with Shirokov in it. The guys has questionable speed and he's soft. Ya he's got some vision and a nice set of hands but give me a break. Total one dimensional player when AV likes all around players. At the same time if you don't bring a speed game to the Canucks yoou better be named Sedin or Hodgson who bring way more to the table. The Canucks pride themselves on speed.

Hello Tanner Glass - he's got zero dimensions.

The thing that struck/strikes me about Shirokov is his complete lack of strength. He certainly has some nice puck skills, but he makes Mason Raymond look like Ryan Kesler when it comes to being strong on his feet. The smallest push sends the guy flying. That is my biggest criticism of him to this point. I don't know if between his callup and the end of the season he improved in that regard, but IMO it was a big factor in his not getting more playing time with the big club.

What exactly are we supposed to do with Shirokov anyway? Do you see him in the bottom 9 for a playoff run? I can see why they apparently didn't qualify this guy. Time to either take another shot somewhere else, or head back to Russia.

How many of our forwards in the minors are "NHL ready" to the point of being a possible callup? List is pretty short once you get past Shirokov. We ain't exactly full in NHL wingers as it is with Raymond out several months.

Haha, from what I read the Canucks are going to 'allow him' to test the free agent waters. I can't imagine Glass would be overly stoked to hit the market; he'd probably take whatever deal we offered him...that being said I have no interest in having him back...his futility in the playoffs was the stuff of legends.

Sedin or Hodgson eh? What has Hodgson brought to the table at this point?

Anyways... Shirokov could easily have taken Tambellini's role of last year and acted as our 13th forward with top 6 fill-in potential. We would need to sign him to a 1 way contract worth less money (700k), then keep him up on the roster. He would be given full opportunity in training camp to fill Raymonds spot, and who knows, he could run with it. Saying he will NEVER make the Canucks is closed minded, as we need valuable depth players that are not waiver eligible. Shirokov could be that, and if Gillis doesn't qualify him that would be a mistake.

Just a possibility on maybe why Sweatt wasn't qualified... Gillis's nephew Matt Pelech wasn't qualified by Calgary and maybe thats where he rather use that contract. Big upgrade on size.

Defence, 6' 3" 220 shoots right. 59 games with the Heat this season with 3 goals (hello Bouwmeester) and 2 assists. 198 penalty minutes and a -9. 26th overall pick in 2005. 5 games in the NHL with 3 assists... turns 25 before the season begins.

Just a theory. Gillis doesn't strike me as a hiring family kind of guy though.
