Someone should work out how much the Avs will have to spend to reach the cap floor after re-signing some of their RFA's.
This is what the Avs will look like after re-signing all their tendered RFAs, and their 2nd overall pick, Gabriel Landeskog (900k base, 2.6 million bonuses). Duncan Siemens won't be on the opening day roster I believe.
With the salary cap at 64.3 mill, the Avs are pretty much 7 million below the cap floor (16 million under upper cap limit). And that's being very generous on salaries to RFAs in my opinion. I think the Avs will make 3 UFA signings come July 1st, a top 4 dman, and a starting goalie and a backup goalie (that would make the Avs a full, 23 man roster).

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $40,699,000;
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $23,601,000 (has to be less than 16 million to reach floor)
The only 3 additions I see them realistically making via UFA are
- sign a G (5-6 million), such as Vokoun
- sign a D (3-4 million), such as Hejda
- sign a G (~ 1 million), such as Harding or Desjardins (backup)
Following players in the minors (first call-ups if needed)
F = Stoa, Olver, Hishon
D = Gaunce, Holos, Elliot, Barrie, Siemens (better for them longterm to play lots in the minors, than 5-6-7 NHL)
Also, its a very young team. Hejduk is the only player above the age of 29.
In fact, Hejduk is the oldest at 35, then McClement at 28, and Joakim Lindstrom 3rd oldest at 27. Everybody else is 26 or younger. In contrast, the Calgary Flames only have 3 players under the age of 27.

Reason: Added Lindstrom, Salary cap now 64.3 mill, Traded Liles, Draft
I don't think Avs will have any trouble reaching the cap floor. If we want a good goalie, I think we better hope the cap floor is $46M-$47M. I got to $43.5M without a goalie just by re-signing UFAs/RFAs. No adding of our #2 pick since we don't know who it is or how ready he will be. Assuming Hishon/Elliot/Barrie/Chouinard/Olver start in LEM.

I am starting to get a bit scared we will go into next season with a weak starter.
Not to mention, if whoever they draft at #2 plays on the team next year as expected, they'll come with a $3 M+ cap hit after bonuses just like every other top pick the last few years.
People seem to say the same thing every year about how they'll have to do this or that just to get to the floor and it's never a problem. They tend to forget all the things that add up to an overall cap hit.
My guess is just a goalie (well 2 goalies I guess).
Avs won't sign a forward I don't think, and definitely not a big name 1. Maybe a third line guy like Kennedy (hopefully) or Upshall.
The might sign a UFA stay at home dman, but I doubt it. I think they wanna go young back there.
2 goalies and sign the UFAs they just qualified. That is about all I am expecting at this point. I am under the impression the team expects a few of their prospects to make the team during camp and is leaving room for them.
It would make me SO HAPPY if they signed a veteran blueliner, but I am on the same page as many of you are- I feel like EJ is the #1 here and does not want to be overshadowed. The blueline is Johnson's.

They won't be adding anyone else besides a goaltender or two I guess, but if they added a 3/4 guy it certainly wouldn't "overshadow" Johnson or take away from it being HIS blue line. Didn't know you had to have 5 awful defensemen to prove who's blue line it is.

I mean adding a guy who could challenge EJ for his spot. Do you know what I mean? I'm not saying the team should shy away from signing 2nd-3rd pairing guys.
Some of my posts tonight are all over the place, folks. Sorry! I am just mentally drained and exhausted. A disastrous combination while online.
So now that Bieska has been resigned by the Canucks, do we have any shot at Ehrhoff if he does not resign with Vancouver. He would be a great dman to pair up with EJ. But i think we might need to spend probably around 5.5 million to sign him which I won't want to do.

Here's a projectable line up with the signings now and how close it is to the $48.3 M cap floor.
I put Lando in the lineup over Hishon, because I think they'll want both to be in the top six if they stay up, and would rather not send Lando back to junior and likely lose him for the year. We'll assume he gets about what Duchene got.
Edit: forgot Gali wasn't signed yet. We'll under cut what he'll get, and put him down for a measily $1 M.
So this would give them $38,968,333 toward the cap and $9,331,667 to spend on two goalies and a top four D.
So theoretcially, the Avs could reach the cap floor with this lineup as it is, and just adding the follwing pieces:
Vokoun - $4.5 M
Smith/Harding - $2 M
Jan Hejda - $2.85 M M
You can of course switch around a few pieces, and move money around a bit, but this shows that the Avs can easily make the cap floor if they do something similar. Even moreso if they sign a guy like Ward or Nichol and add some bigger cap hits while pushing guys like Winnik and Yip down the depth chart.
You're going to reward O'Byrne for re-signing by pairing him with Hunwick?
You, sir, are cruel.
Haha, yea well I think it's a more likely option than trying to keep him in the top four on his off side.
By the way, I like how when I first started doing these threads, I was bolding the cap amounts and how much we had left to spend to reach the cap ceiling. Now it's being done to show how much we have to spend to reach the cap floor.
Oh how the times have changed, and the purse strings pulled.
Quincey - Johnson
Hejda - Elliott
Hunwick - O'Byrne
Varlamov
X
Scratches - Yip, Van Der Gulik, Liffiton
This would give the Avs $44,643,333 towards the cap and $3,656,667 to get to the $48.3 M floor with this 23 man roster.
They are unlikely to sign a backup for that amount, so they will either have to sign Vokoun (which appears unlikely now) or add another money UFA or trade to bring in a big cap hit.
