Personally I don;t see any point in trading Gomez unless a top 1 or 2 center is coming back the other way, the odds of which happening are slim to none. I think we should just be patient and tough it out. The 2012 UFA class isn't much better than this year. It truly get's interesting in 2013 with the likes of:

Crosby, Sidney » F PIT 23 $8,700,000 2013 (UFA)
Perry, Corey » F ANA 26 $5,325,000 2013 (UFA)
Getzlaf, Ryan » F ANA 26 $5,325,000 2013 (UFA)

and more!

i don't think i would like to have brad richards on my team six or more years from now at some insane cap hit. i bet he would't get more than 70 point in martin system anyway.

No offense, but that's a pretty ridiculous conclusion to my post. I'm not writing a big fat rule to be followed, I am giving my opinion on the Gomez situation. And we are absolutely not talking about a 100 points player, rather a 60 points player with a 100 points cap hit.

And is the UFA route the only way to replace a Gomez? What about the trade market, either now or at the deadline? Only Pierre Gauthier knows what is really available and what price. And we don't have 15M available, add the numbers up with a cushion for callups.

We don`t need Gomez just replace him with DD and you will see the offensive output from Gionta-DD-Patch...Then what you do is go a get big winger for the Pleks line and go get a guy like Anthony Stewart to play on the third line with Eller.

Planning to have DD in the top 6 is a bad idea from the get go.

What gets me is the notion that DD would end up in the top-6 before Eller would.

Why i think he is more talented then Gomez,he has more heart, wins more battles then Gomez, goes in the corners,he is a better point producer than Gomez and thats with guys like moen, pyatt, white and darche on his line.Imagine what he can do with Patch and Gionta on his wings.

it doesn't matter. one 100pts player is better than two 50 pts players. one 60ts is better than two 30pts players - as simple as that.

top six centers don't grow on trees. ask brian burke. the only assets we have that could realistically land us significant upgrade over gomez are price and subban.

gorges 3m + hammer 3m + (let say) cole 4m + white 0,6m + a couple of some ufa bottom liners 1.5 apiece (which is probably too much but whatever) = 13.6m and we still have more than 1m for the callups cushion.

and even if we have to clear up some cap space it would be easier to move (and replace) spacek's 3.8 (one year) than scotty.

Of course technically you can sign Richards without having to trade Gomez but you're putting yourself in a very bad situation cap wise. What will you do when Price, Subban and other guys hit free agency in a year? You'll be scrambling to find a taker for Gomez. Not only that but if you put Gomez on the 4th line your asking for trouble. He'll just go through the motions and bring that whole line down which can affect the entire team. He'll essentially become a very expensive weight, even more than he is right now.

Watch the cap rise, watch Spacek come off the books, with gill, hammer if he's resigned. Getting them two under contract will likely almost be paid for by the increase in cap alone. This year we are in no real need to trade Gomez, we already have capspace we won't be able to use. As much as it pains me to say it, Gomez is probably best fit with us this year.

DD and Eller are not suitable replacements, not yet, anyways.

The thing is, you have to pay for the players that will replace all those players that are leaving..

You mean Palushaj, Leblanc and Beaulieu

what people don't realize is that not only do Spacek, Gill and Moen's money come off the books next year.....so does Price's and Subban's as well!!!!

That's a good portion of money that we'll need to re-sign them.

I figure it will cost about 8.5 - 9 million per season to get Pricer and Subby under contract.

Money available next year:

Moen - 1.5
Gill - 2.25
Spacek - 3.83
Price - 2.75
Subban - .875
Kostitsyn - 3.25
Darche - .700

total = $15.15 million to re-sign Price and Subban......I think we'll be ok

And what do you do when an inevitable injury happens? Not much cap room to play with in that regards.

TheFourthPeriod:

Some interesting Habs/Gomez news for y'all......

Cryptic from the Fourth Period no?

Go to their site, sorry the link isn't working right now - I guess lots of traffic. Basically says they are indeed shopping Gomez, and Gomez has been told that he is being shopped.

Pretty simple, if we get an injury on D, you slide Weber back there. If there is an injury up front, you call up someone from Hamilton for 500k and if its a top 6 that gets hurt, you have Gomez take his spot.

That is the luxury of having a $7.3m 4th line centre

Speaking on the basis of anonymity, an NHL source close to the situation confirmed to TFP Tuesday afternoon the Habs are indeed actively shopping Gomez. The source also indicated that the Canadiens have informed Gomez of their actions.
Quote:
While a trade is not imminent, Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier has spoken with at least three teams about Gomez's services.

Gomez, who appears motivated to rebound after his dismal campaign, has informed the Habs his preference is to stay in Montreal, but understands a trade may be possible.
