I think Florida picks him up for cap purposes.

Florida, New Jersey, Columbus, Islanders, Colorado...take your shot at a free Cam Barker. He's got talent and a big frame. Just needs a good coach and a system that fits his play.

I'd like for the Blue Jackets to take a chance on him but not until he's bought out.

A former 3rd overall young player will not make it past waivers, someone will pick him up.

Unless he is absolute trash like people say he is here, I haven't seen him play since he left Chicago.

I remember liking Barker a lot a few years ago and I tried having him in all my fantasy leagues. Even last year I tried, thinking he would rebound one day. It's really looking bad for him. How can a player be so good and disappear and become a pylon over such a short period of time is beyond me.

At this point, I can see him as being a project and wouldn't mind him on my team. Paying him 1.5 while he wakes up from his funk by being waived may be just what's needed to get him to prove himself to every other team again.
The annoying saying of low risk, high reward is in play here. 1.5M for a third pairing with potential second pairing is pretty good
You'll say that until you actually see him on your 3rd pairing. He's truly awful.

Let's put it this way, he was outplayed by four different rookies last year.

While it seems likely it's a precursor to a buyout, it's not a certainty. The Flames waived Kotalik during this point last season, but then still kept him.

What people don't realize is that he was never "so good." He put up 40 points because he was forcefed PP time before Keith broke out and racked up 29PP points in that season. He was tied for 6th in the league for PP points, but his ES production (10 points) was comparable to Hal Gill and Radek Martinek.

He was always, at best, questionable at even strength - offensively and defensively.

Amazing how he has fallen from a 40 point season to being waived 2 years later. I still think he will end up somewhere after he is bought out.

Maybe. I would say that not trading Gaborik when it was clear we wouldn't be resigning was worse.

Its been said before, but I could see Florida snagging him. He played decent on a Tallon team before, and they need cap space eaten, even if it is by useless players.

Or trading for Chris Simon during the year we were looking to be a good playoff team..

Especially just to replace Ehrhoff on the PP.

He's lazy and directionless. It's possible he could get a wake up call from this, and turn into a servicable player, but he has no future in Minnesota.

Dallas might take a chance on him. I'd almost rather do that than sign some of the scrub UFA defensemen available. Stars have to get to the floor somehow and if it doesn't work out he's in the press box. Gultzman has been pretty good with young defenders maybe he can figure out Cam's issues.

Keep in mind we had Rick Wilson in charge of defense last year, who was very much a part of Brent Burns' All Star season.

Also, Barker seemed to average about a shot every other game and was rarely on the PP. He has a heavy shot but never hit the net and never used it.

Honestly, I hope it turns out this way for him. His career is circling the drain right now, and if he can show even a glimpse of the resurgence Grabner had this last year, then good for him. It's just not gonna happen in Minnesota.
