Starting to get slim on the FA market.
Players that can fill the top 9 role in the Habs lineup:
Scottie Upshall
Raffi Torres
Joel Ward
Erik Cole
Tomas Kopecky (could sign with Florida)
Simon Gagne
Chris Higgins
Michal Handzus
Michael Ryder
Tomas Fleishmann
Ville Leino
Jason Arnott
Andrew Brunette
Bottom 6 players:
Maxime Talbot
Brad Winchester
Zenon Kenopka
Ben Eager
Danny Carcillo
Anthony Stewart
Arron Asham
Mike Rupp
Habs might have to go through the trade route in order to fill their needs.
It would be great to see Habs get a player like R.J. Umberger from Columbus and Ryan Malone from TB.

Nothing against Talbot but if we are to add size and toughness to the bottom 6 we want to go a lot bigger than him at 5'11" 185 or thereabouts.
Fleischmann has health issues and has yet to be cleared to work out so he would be a pretty risky signing right now.
Trade Spacek with a pick or prospect and either deal Weber or send him down to Hamilton to develop for half of the season.
Who cares about his size. He's a horrible defensemen.
You guys are so obsessed with size that you forget that the most important part of hockey is actually being able to play the sport which Barker cannot do; which is why he's on waivers.
Barker is about as good of a defenseman as Alexandre Picard, if not worse. On the Habs' depth chart, as it stands now with Spacek and without Hamrlik, he would be at the absolute best 7th on the depth chart, if not 8th behind Weber (or 9th behind Weber and Diaz).
Sorry but do you know anything about Cam Barker except that he is 6'3", 225 pounds and drafted 3rd overall???
Hamrlik >>>> Barker
I will start by admitting that I have not followed his career, much, but I'm surprised to see Barker waived... for such a big defenseman, highly picked and highly touted for a few years ago, is he really THAT bad? or just overpaid for what he brings?

Looks like Hammer might test out FA, we don't seem to be making progress with Wiz, we are more than likely to miss out on Ehrhoff, what do guys think of Jovocop?
I didn't really watch the Yotes in the playoffs but where does he lie skill wise? What do you think he'll get moneywise?
Christ, if we don't sign jagr or make a few upgrades we'll be hard pressed to spend our cap space, if this team leaves 4-5million open, I'll be pissed off.

This really puts the Kostitsyn re-signing in perspective for anyone that didn't like it. Only Cole is a good bet to be better than him next season from that list. Lieno was in a very favourable situation last year in Philadelphia while Gagne and Fleichmann are injury risks. Although you missed Jussi Jokinen who is decent.
As for a Gomez replacement. The only UFA centers that outscored him are Richards, Connolly, Belanger and Morrison. Belanger had the best season in his career, Morrison is ancient and played in between Tanguay and Iginla, Connolly is an injury risk who Buffalo can't wait to get rid of and Richards is a the premier UFA this summer. Gomez is probably the best chance of getting the 55 point 2nd line center next year the team needs.

It's weird, because I feel the same way but when I look at what's available on the market I ask myself "what the Hell can we spend the money on?"
I mean, just on principle it's lame for a rich team not to spend close to the cap (and a bit of a PR black eye), but these are very weird times.

I would be thrilled to have Jovanovski with the Habs but he will cost more than Hamrlik. Ther's also no way that he would consider a one year contract.
He might be seeking something like 2-3 years 3.5-4M$ per
With Spacek and Gill off the books after the season, I would'nt mind such a contract.
