Canucks trade Ehrhoff's rights to NYI (4th round pick in '12)
I'd like to see him back but assume he will sign elsewhere. Will Gillis trade his rights? If so, what kind of value can you see coming back the other way? I think teams are even more desperate this year than last and the Hamhuis and Bouwmeester deals can be used as comparisons.
2011
Bryzgalov - Clackson, 3rd round pick 2012, 3rd rd. pick 2011 (conditional)
2010
Hamhuis - Parent and a conditional pick
Hamhuis - 3rd pick
2009
Bouwmeester - Leopold and a 3rd rd pick
2007
Hartnell and Timonen for a 1st rd. pick
So what's he worth?
Looks like a 3rd round pick that moves to a second if he signs. I think that's fair.

How close to July 1st were those trades made?
Only four more days, including today, for anyone to negotiate with him. I'm assuming the trade value goes down everyday.

99.99997% chance MG doesn't deal his rights, he'll negotiate right to the end, however I doubt it goes that far anyways.

As an Avs fan, I would flip the 2012 Toronto 2nd round pick we got in the Liles trade for his rights.
Gamble, but we have infinite cap space and could pay to keep him before July 1.

Hmmm... A Toronto second round pick. Thats pretty much a late first rounder. Deal.

Alright, you conference in Gillis and I'll get Sherman on the bridge. What's the pass code for the call?

Mackenzie: VAN dangling rights to Ehrhoff
TSNBobMcKenzie 11:33am via Web
Unless there's a new development, looks as though Christian Ehrhoff is headed to UFA on July 1. VAN reportedly offered him Bieksa $$$.
TSNBobMcKenzie 11:34am via Web
It's believed VAN is now asking other NHL teams if they have interest in acquiring Ehrhoff's negotiating rights prior to July 1.

I can't blame Erhoff for not accepting 'Bieksa money' if that's true. He'll make millions more on the open market.

yeah i never thought there was any reason for Ehrhoff to take a discount to stay in vancouver, he has no loyalty here. He can get a massive payday elsewhere. its not as if vancouver is the only team with a chance at the cup.

Horrible news.
I can't believe they're not offering more than what Bieksa got. Ehrhoff has been the better player and is tougher to replace.
Hard to imagine the Canucks being a better team next year without Ehrhoff...

This really sucks. He's worth more than Bieksa so I don't blame him for not taking that money. He would be stupid to.
There is nobody the Canucks can get that will replace what Ehrhoff does.
Will be quite a hit to the Canucks next season.

Less effective power play. Isn't that what cost us the Cup (rather than the lack of "bruisers" up front or goaltending)?

Not surprising. It's going to hurt our PP and our transition game not having him, but he's not worth over +5 mill. Nonetheless, I wish Ehrhoff well.

Pretty dumb if they offered him Bieksa money. I hope they're just playing hardball, and will still come up with some sort of deal last minute. This isn't just a matter of us getting worse, but a team like San Jose or Detroit will likely nab him and they'll be that much better.

This loss is a minor inconvenience IMO...provided Gillis finds legit top 6 help.

I think people are exaggerating the impact of Ehrhoff. He had 21 ESP and Bieksa had 19. Where Ehrhoff thrived was on the PP but I don't think he's irreplaceable, to a large extent the reason he thrived is because he was on the #1 unit and got a ton of minutes there.

Does this mean Ballard stay?
Also, Ehrhoff won't be missed. Only on the PP.

Prediction: Ehrhoff gets right around 6 million.

I'm fine with no Ehrhoff as long as we re-sign Salo, I think our defense still looks pretty damn good then. Hoffer will be a loss on the PP but I changed my mind to wanting Bieksa more than him after our playoff run. I'm not comfortable with paying him 6 million/year or something if that's what he's looking for, I've had a feeling for awhile that some team is going to throw stupid money at him. Not worth it.
