What the hell would they spend that cap space on!?

They'd have 21 million in cap space. It makes no sense, especially considering the thin UFA pool and I really don't want the Habs to overpay anyone on teh UFA list this year like Laich.

Exactly!

Aside from Richards there really isn't any option to spend money on, the best thing would be to give Gomez one more season, Gomez looked very good with Pac and Gio before his injury and he takes lot of pride in his game so I honestly believe he'll work his ass off and come back and get around 60 points. Obviously that isn't worth $7 mill but is a lot better than the remaining UFA garbage. Even if we trade Gomez we'll need to take some salary back and on top of that we'll have to overpay for a plug like Tim Connolly or Arnott.

IMO give Gomez one more year, if he sucks he'll be easier to ship out as his actual salary is around $5 mill his last two years and maybe this year Eller or Desharnais could potentially step up and become a legit second line center.

Nobody wants poor Scott Gomez. Why oh why was he brought here in the first place? It was clearly a bad decision and good luck to Gauthier if he thinks another GM will take Gomez and all that money. I predict that he is a Hab for the duration of his deal.

Considering that the only real alternative is Brad Richards, I would have to think so.

Removing Gomez would also give them 15 million in cap space with only one hole (the top-6 center position vacated by Gomez, obviously). And almost no one on the UFA market to throw all that money at.

And 2011-2012 with Plekanec-Eller-DD-whoever as the centerline isn't happening, period. That would be a giant misstep by Gauthier.

If they DO move Gomez, and I remain skeptical, but if they do, it will not be their only move.

And why would they even tell Gomez they are doing this, anyway?

The problem with this is that you might not have any takers next year. With the large jump in cap floor this year, the floor teams are forced to take on salary. If the cap doesn't rise substantially next year (and keep in mind, the big jump this year is mostly due to the new TV contract), then the floor teams will have already done their shopping.

First of all, to be respectfull. But I think it is more related to the three places he listed on his NTC.

Why not? On the habs forum Tony is apparently a very reliable source for stuff.

Honestly would we relly be in better shape?

Lecavalier has a worse contract and is only a bit better. I would probably take a chance, but not at the expense of young assets.

It would be hilarious, everyone would be screaming at PG for not spending to the cap ceiling.

Next year Gomez becaome very attractive to a floor team because his salary will be 10 mil but his cap hit will be 14.7, that's money on their bottom line. Even moreso if he has a rebound year(55-60 points).

Gauthier: "Hello Mr Gomez, I just thought I'd be up front with you about our intentions: We're looking to move you. In fact, we have 3 teams interested in your services right now."
Gomez: "Oh ya, which 3 teams?"
Gauthier: "The Islanders, Blues and Coyotes."
Gomez: "Interesting. If you'd like my list of 3 teams I won't accept a trade to I can provide it right now."

Then they'll use it as "proof" that Molson is cheap and is only concerned with making money and that is why he doesn't want to spend to the cap to make his team competitive since he can save money in salary and still have the seats full...blah blah...you that stupid conspiracy that comes up every few months.

I understand that. But all the floor teams need to spend money this year. If they add money on multi-year contracts (such as Brian Campbell of UFA signings) then they will already be at the cap floor next year. If they are already at the cap floor, the savings from Gomez's contract are irrelevant.

[QUOTE=billy piton;34238921]it doesn't matter. one 100pts player is better than two 50 pts players. one 60ts is better than two 30pts players - as simple as that.

Not always. If you have one line with a 100pt player it can be easy to defend against one line. If you have a line with a 50 point guy then a 2nd line with another 50 point guy it's harder to defend against. Actually most teams covet balanced scoring
