Michal Handzus signed? (denied, signs with Sharks)
I can go for Zeus coming back...perfect temp stop-gap measure while we assess Shenn and Couturier...
As a result, even if the cap space is there to compete to sign Laich (it will be if Leino elects not re-sign with the club), they may still be better served to bring in a cheaper stop-gap such as former Flyers center Michal Handzus. Zeus will have to take a paycut wherever he goes and is likely to be on the market beyond the first day or two of the UFA period. He was never fast -- and is now one of the slowest skaters in the league -- but he is still strong on faceoffs and solid defensively with underrated hands.
Zeus is considerably slower even compared to when he first signed with the Kings. He is now fourth line or nothing in the opinion of most Kings fans. He is still money on special teams though, when it comes to the penalty kill, there are few players you'd rather have out there than Zeus, and he still was our second center for our second powerplay unit at times because of his presence in front of the net, but he is now borderline outmatched in 5 on 5 play on the third line. It may work out as he and Simmonds have considerable chemistry and made up one of the best shutdown lines we've had over the past several season.
"I think part of his game is he’s over aggressive at times, which I like. We’ll tame that. I’d rather tame a lion than paint stripes on the kitty cat." - Dean Lombardi discussing Brayden McNabb
