I bet most of the big names for next years strong class get locked up before they hit UFA, too.

Exactly right. No has-been "veteran" dman, no third liner, none of that crap. The UFA market sucks and is rife with overpayment. We feel we have a very specific need with Richards so let's pursue that but otherwise let's stay the hell away from everyone else.

Washington is going to hate Laich for the last few years of his 6 year deal.

Neither is 2013's. Crosby, Getzlaf and Perry will all be locked up way before they reach UFA

That's one of the reasons a lot of pundits are speculating that the trade market will be very active.

A shame that Pens fans didn't show him the same respect after he left that you are now...I can see Craps fans booing him every time he touched the puck as a Ranger, I thought Pens fans doing it was classless.

Its because the cap continues to rise drastically, allowing teams to better lock up their guys without problems.

The year the cap didn't rise at all was the year that the best UFA contracts were found.

Belfour, Gilmour, Nieuwendyk and Mark Howe are the HOF inductees for this season.

Good selections, although I'm a bit wary of Nieuwendyk getting in.

Exactly.

See: The reception Messier got at MSG when he was a Canuck.

See: The reception Jagr got at Melon Arena when he was a Ranger.

And Jagr was with the Pens for almost double the amount of seasons that Messier was in NY when he was forced off the team and signed with the Canucks. And Jagr was a big part of TWO cups there.

It was very classless of the majority of Penguins fans in the arena to throw Jagr under the bus and boo him every time he touched the puck. They don't deserve him back. I hope he signs with Detroit and they destroy the Pens in the finals with Jagr. They talked tons of crap about him when he was with the Caps and Rangers. Now he's "always been a Penguin" because they're desperate for anything resembling a decent winger. Embarrassing.

I'll give Jagr a standing ovation his first game back at MSG no matter who he plays for.

564 goals, 1000 points, 1257 regular season games, Calder Trophy, King Clancy Trophy, Conn Smythe, and 3 Stanley Cups with 3 different teams? Throw in an Olympic gold medal for good measure, and you've definitely got a definite hall of famer, in my book.

Especially those years when Lemieux was retired. Jaromir Jagr was the Pittsburgh Penguins. Look at Jagr's performances during 1998, 1999 and 2000. Just dominant, and eventually without the help of Ron Francis as well who signed with Carolina in summer 98. And Pittsburgh made the playoffs all three years.

How crazy would it be if Crosby actually made it to free agency?

Glad Pitkanen is off the market.

However, Kaberle will reach July 1st and that scares the **** out of me.

I don't think it would be too crazy at all. I mean,is Pittsburgh all that desireable a place to live? They are a good team and all but I could see Sid testing free agency.

Came here to post this. $4.5M for 6 years to keep a guy who's a spotty 50 point player on a team that features Alex Semin, Alex Ovechkin, and Nick Backstrom. Wow.

Nieuwendyk was one of the game's elite players until he was hurt. I think when you factor in his postseason success, it tips the scale in his favor.

But his numbers are not HOF worthy at all since 1992. If you look at it, he did not produce the offensive numbers he should have in a high-offense era.

The one thing I will give him is that he was the best forward on a super stacked Flames team for years, including Joe Mullen, Theo Fluery, Hakan Loob, Sergei Makarov, Doug Gilmour and Mike Bullard/Dan Quinn. That probably helped his case.

$4.5 for 3 years isn't too bad for Pitkanen.
