With the Pitkanen and Bieksa signings today it's looking like the market for Erhoff and Wizniewski is gonna be pretty competitive. As an alternative to handing out a contract with perhaps unfavorable terms, would Detroit be interested in a one year stop-gap? Or perhaps Holland just gets outbid by foolishly large offers. Either way, this is a plan B type of idea.
The idea I'm having is Matt Carle, on an expiring contract for 3.5 million dollars. He has already been a pretty solid Robin to Pronger's Batman, and actually looked reasonably competent in his absence this year (40+ points, mostly even strength). Detroit gets a year to see if Carle can come close to filling Rafalski's shoes, if not they can try again next off season. If so, they can attempt to resign him during the year or whenever.
What is you guys' gut reaction to this? If you were considering going through with it, what would you realistically offer for Carle?
If Holland decides a stop-gap is the best option, Carle is pretty attractive. He's the kind of player we are looking for and only has one year left on his contract. None of the guys on the open market are going to sign 1-year deals, so none of them are options as stop-gaps.
2013 2nd, bout it. Rather wait and see whats out there July 1st.
The idea was that what's on the market doesn't pan out, either because the price to sign them is unreasonable, or they simply opted for somewhere else. This is more of a late-July/early-August move to get someone to play with Lidstrom if that hole is still there on the roster.
Carle would be an alright addition but I wouldn't give up more than a 3rd.
We have Stuart, Kronwall and Lids all UFAs next year if we're gonna go with a 1 year rental might as well sign Jovo.
After the year Jovonovski just had I doubt he's interested in a one year deal. He'll probably want decent money for a few years...which probably still wouldn't be a bad idea if you can get him, he's a good player.

Mostly looking for cap space, honestly, ha. I guess Holmgren's interest would be in prospects or picks. Maybe a nice D prospect in return. We have a lot of prospect defensemen, but none of them rate to be anything more than depth guys (one of whom I'm sure one of could be sent over along with Carle if needed).
