Drury Officially Bought Out

Quote:
"It was a great honor and privilege to be a New York Ranger for the past four years, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to fulfill that childhood dream," Drury said in a statement that was sent to The Post by e-mail. "The Rangers are a first-class organization with great people in the hockey, public relations, team services and community relations departments.

"I would also like to thank Ranger fans. They always inspired me to do the best I could in whatever role I was asked to play. Playing before them in the Garden was a thrill of a lifetime. I wish all the fans and the entire Ranger organization the best of luck in the future."

Gomez? Check.
Redden? Check.
Drury? Check.

Sather makes a lot of mistakes but he sure as hell isn't shy about fixing them.

Because cap hit did not equal value. The Rangers have established that though UFAs are free to grab the biggest deal they can, they are expected to contribute commensurate to that cap hit.

Drury's broken body simply couldn't justify any more than 1m/year or so.

Is he healthy? Could he play next year or is his career over?

Because he has a career ending injury. Id bet $100 in a couple of days the rangers will give him a front office job that just happens to pay back the money he lost from the buyout as a show of gratitude for not filing a grievance with the league.

Someone will sign him to a cheap 1 year contract to see if he can still play. If he does well, he'll cash in next year, if he doesn't then he doesn't.

That's if he can even attempt to play. What's his status? Done?

So we'll probably see this exact thread but swap the name for Richards in about 2 years again. Rinse and repeat.

I'd give it about 3 years, this has already been discussed on the Rangers boards that any long term deal will turn into Drury Part II. But the plan is that the extra 40 goals or so that is expected from Richards, combining his own with the set ups for Gaborik, should make the Rangers one of the top offensive teams in the league based on last years stats.

They've already got D and goaltending so this could drastically improve their compete level.

And then you pay the price past year 3...

It depends on the knee - if it allows him to atually play, then he's a fine 3d or 4th liner and even playing injured he popped in a big goal on his return at the end of last season.

I don't think anyone knows whether the LTIR was a negotiating ploy or real. I hope he can play and ends his career properly rather than via buyout (just not on the Rangers, we don't need no stinking vets...)

Watch the Jets just come in snag him out of nowhere

I don't even know why i'm putting the emoticon, it would not surprise me one bit if a totally random team came out of nowhere and signed him while everyone expected Buffalo/New York/Toronto to take him.

If that 4 million is over 6 seasons, that might make more sense.

He's now the sort of guy that has a lot of qualities for a team that aren't close to the cap.

You're going to be disappointed if you're expecting 40 goals from Richards...

He's saying Richards will help produce 40 goals, not necessarily pot them all himself.

Sad to see this happen to Drury, but it was for the best interest of the Rangers. They had to do what was necessary to be a better team. I don't think this seals Richards to the Rangers. IMO it was already sealed and it was only a matter of time, Drury still there or not.

If he's physically able to play, I'm sure a team will express interest. I wouldn't mind him at all back here in Buffalo, but we've just got way too many bottom 6 forwards (Kotalik back adds to our options there) and we likely won't be able to re-sign any of our own veterans like Grier or Niedermayer if we wanted to, let alone sign veterans off the market to play in our bottom 6. If we find some room for him, I'd like to give him a call. If Gaustad can play as the 3rd line center, I'd feel comfortable having Drury on the 4th line, especially using him on the PK and as a faceoff specialist on the PP.

40 goals from Richards? Are you on drugs? The guys never cracked 30 goals nevermind 40. He's more of an assist machine.
