The bright side is that it doesn't appear to involve Weber; unfortunately, it seems to involve O'Reilly, Spaling, Halischuk and Kostitsyn.

Chicago failed to qualify some of their RFAs a few years ago. They were able to re-sign them despite their UFA status, but had to pay a bit more than they would've liked, I think.

Generally, NHL teams have Assistant GMs who handle the ins and outs of contract work, and that would fall to him.

The deadline was 5 PM EDT on Monday, right? Was it just a missed deadline or what? What the hell, the fax machine broke?

We heard about who didn't get QO'd (Sanotrelli/Gendur) the other day, so what's going on?

I'm thoroughly confused.

There are still 2 days before free agency can't we still qualify them. I would be furious at Poile if we lost anyone to this.

You need to offer RFAs a certain contract in order to retain their rights (for most players the value of the contract is whatever they earned the prior season for 1 year, although under a certain $ threshold, you must offer them a raise). If you don't, they become unrestricted free agents.

No, the deadline for QO's was Monday at 5. This exact thing happened to Chicago a couple of years ago and they had to rush to sign everyone before July 1, lest losing them to UFA. It essentially gave the players all the leverage, and they all got more than they were worth.

In other words, the extra money we had to spend this summer likely just went into bigger than expected contracts for Kostitsyn, Spaling, Halischuk and O'Reilly.

Unfortunately not. If this is true and not some mixup (i.e. the fax was sent but never received type of situation), then they are UFAs and the Preds either lose them or have to resign them at noticeable increases over what they would have received as RFAs. If this is true, someone probably lost their job as it could easily cost the organization +$1M more a year for Kostistyn alone, if we didn't just lose him outright.

Yeah, this can potentially be quite devastating. Especially to a team with an internal budget. Is there any timeline as to the NHL's ruling? I would assume this would need to happen real quickly.

There was supposed to be a hearing in early July when it happened to Hawks ,, But Hawks went and signed all the players to significant raises to retain them

That is why Versteeg and Barker became 3M+ players

Well I bet we lose Klasen and Thurressons rights and thats not a huge deal but still bad.

Halischuk might actually get the same or a bit less as the qualifying offer except have a 1way contract.
Spaling could potentially make double his offer make a bit over 1 million.
O'Reilly will likely make over a million as well probably about 1.5.
Kostitsyn could be very problematic. Brooks Laich got 4.5per year, and if thats any indication then we could be stuck paying up to 4m per year for him.

I dont think Kostitsyn gets 4M ,, I think the Versteeg 3M example fits him as it is comparable in age/season as Steeger at time

Who cares? Klasen was going to be a career AHL all-star if he could avoid anyone who played physical, while Thuresson proved he wouldn't get more than a cup of coffee with the Preds.
