In the future but not right now. Can't expect them to be able handle NHL minutes if they haven't established they can play at the AHL level effectively yet.

the is a big meh. i like the guy, he's a solid depth guy to play a few games for you but don't want him as a regular on a team built on transition and moving the puck. the deal is reasonable but not great for the canucks.

can anyone guess what alberts would get as a ufa? try to convince me that he'd make much more than 1.25M per if he went to the highest bidder because i don't see it. for all the talk of hometown discounts to play here the contracts this week have been decidedly fair value.

I don't think Parent makes this roster unless he soundly beats out Tanev in the pre-season. Good luck with that.

People are underestimating the worth of Alberts to the team. He buys in. The coaches trust him. He gets the system. He clears the net and is sound positionally. Who will do that on the open market for 1.25m?
Rome is adequate at both sides.

Alberts doesn't play the right side so Option A doesn't work either.
Ballard played the right side with Alberts for a stretch, and I thought that pairing was good.

Ballard - Tanev also worked out ok.

If only Edler & Ballard played well together, would solve so many issues.

Agree with the comments on Parent, hopefully we will not be seeing him on the big club this year.

As for Montador - wouldn't surprise me if we made an offer.

Hamhuis - Bieksa
Edler - Salo
Ballard -Montador
Alberts
Rome
Tanev

Option A works fine I just mistakenly had Alberts/Ballard on their wrong sides. Alberts spent the majority of his ice time with Ballard last season. Alberts-Ballard.

I like AA. He seems like a really good team guy and from all accounts very coachable. He`s physical and have no issues with him in the top 6 for half the season filling in on injuries etc. Love the beast!

Sure we may have 9/10 capable D - but how many are capable top four D (that includes injury prone Salo)?

Agreed. And I take it one step further: Montador can sub into the top 4 for longer periods of time than people think. He plays 19~ min a game. He was seen on the 2nd pairing a lot in Buffalo, behind Myers. He can hold his own. If he is the weakest top 4 dman on the team, then he's fine. If asked to do more, then you will start to see the cracks.

Im with you on this one. I kind of want Parent and Tanev in the lineup with one of them aside Edler and one aside Salo. Would do miles for their development.

Ballard - Tanev worked out OK because Ballard played the left side. Alberts - Ballard was bleh because Ballard just doesn't do as well on the right side.

You're with him on Parent not being ready and yet you think he should play in the NHL with one of Edler or Salo? Are we trying to win the Cup or what's the plan here... ?

Good to have Alberts back. I love his physicality and the fact he's a stand up guy for his teammates. I'm not sure why people expected him to take a paycut? The cap goes up, wages go up. Can't have enough NHL quality depth on the back end.

Good signing. Canucks will likely carry 8 NHL defenders again, and he can add a nice push of physicality in the bottom pair.

Alberts made big strides from 09-10 to 10-11, I hope he continues to be coachable and improve.

Good deal. A guy his size could've gotten more on the open market

Not sure why/how anyone can be upset about this.

We went through 13 defenseman last year. Obviously we need the depth on the back end, and it only makes sense to maintain guys who are familiar with the system.

We were one game away from winning it all. Why not try to keep as much as the team entact?

It's not terrible though I would've preferred re-signing Salo & signing Montador instead (two righties).

I'd agree here; I'm guardedly suspicious we may not even wade into the UFA defensemen market, and just re-sign Salo and sit on what we have. I would be very unhappy with that.

Why? The UFA market is not the place to "team build". Unless you get hometown discounts the UFA market should be avoided. I'll be happy with a Salo signing, or even Montador if he were willing to play ball Gillis style. Trades are what we need. We have assets we just need a willing partner, and we've got all summer for that.

If the Canucks go into the season with

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Salo
Ballard-Rome
Alberts

1st Call up Tanev

As their D-corps. I would be extremely pissed off.

That Defence group is one major injury to Hamhuis/Salo away from unmitigated disaster.

Gillis has to bring in a guy like a Montador as the 8th defenceman.

With Hamhuis' and Salo's injury history it just wouldn't be prudent not to.
