Free Agent Frenzy GDT (Aka the Brad Richards Thread Part IV)

Part 1.
Part 2.
Part 3.
Part 4.

Continue as thread 4 aproaches 1000k posts...

Free Agent Frenzy

Top 5 UFA Forwards:
  • 1. Brad Richards -- self explanatory
  • 2. Teemu Selanne -- really shouldn't be here, as he's re-signing with Anaheim or retiring, but he's still by far the 2nd best available UFA forward.
  • 3. Erik Cole -- speedy, physical, veteran winger can put up 20 goals and 50 points.
  • 4. Ville Leino -- the puck handling wizard recorded 53 points last season and broke a Philadelphia Flyers record for rookie points in a single playoff run.
  • 5. Simon Gagne -- although still relatively young at 30, injuries have derailed a fine career -- still a clutch, veteran 2nd line presence.

Top 5 UFA Defenseman:
  • 1. Tomas Kaberle -- consistent 45-55 point producer on the backend, but found himself playing limited ice time as a part of the Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup winning roster.
  • 2. Ed Jovanovski -- not the player he once was, but he can still contribute positively to a team's top-4 defense.
  • 3. James Wisniewski -- put up 50 points in a season where he played with the Islanders and Canadiens; he's known for his wicked slapshot.
  • 4. Sami Salo -- better hope he comes with a warranty. Good defenseman, awful durability.
  • 5. Scott Hannan -- solid #4 shutdown defenseman split time between the Caps and Avs last season.

Top-3 UFA Goaltenders:
  • 1. Tomas Vokoun -- one of the most consistent and underrated goalies since 2005.
  • 2. Johan Hedberg -- solid veteran backup is most useful in a 1B role.
  • 3. Joshua Harding -- injuries have set back his development, but he's talented and still young; has potential to be a 1A.

All signs point to Richards wanting to get through this quickly and painlessly.

The absolute latest I see him signing is July 7th.

I expect it to be done on July 1st or 2nd to be honest with you.

I think he will get all his offer together quickly and then make a decision.

But with some of these star players you never know.

I just hope it ends up like July 1st, 2009—all the big guys (Cammalleri, Gaborik, Hossa) signing nice and early.

Redden and Frolov are represented by the same sports agency as Richards, that ain't good.

Though Girardi and Lundqvist are also represented by them

Redden was the only bad signing out of those 4. Lundqvist was fair, Frolov and Girardi were very solid, and Redden just sucks.

WOW 5 parts? I hope no one jump out of the window when he'll sign with some other team. If he wants to win something he should stay a way from the Rangers. Sorry, I forgot that New York is his dream city and Torts is his God Father

I just got this sinking feeling that Richards will sign with Detroit on Friday. The same feeling I got with Gaborik and the Rangers.

What do I know, though?

Aww come on, Brian Boyle. When you make polls you need to show usernames. It keeps opposing team fans from storming our board and voting for themselves

Just click on the numbers, and you'll see who voted for who. A Sabre fan voted for Buffalo and is lurking our boards as we speak =0

I think Sather is ready to blow his brains out, sacrifice a lamb, explode a tabacco barge, eat a tree, bike to japan, or microwave his testicles to get his Richards to sign here. He wants him BAD. From the comments i've heard, i think he'll do whatever it takes short of losing a franchise player in Dubi or Cally by not having enough left to sign them afterwards.

Let's just hope he doesn't have a heart attack while biking to Japan after taking that tabacco barge. I wouldn't want anyone biking to Japan after smoking a ton of cigars.

I get the feeling it will be between the Rangers and Buffalo. Terry Pegula, the new Sabres owner, has talked a big game regarding his willingness to spend and has changed the culture in Buffalo totally. We'll see how badly Richards wants to be a Ranger but it's safe to say it's going to be a lengthy, expensive deal.

LOL. Hopefully he doesn't spazz out and offer Richards the universe and then some. I've been hearing some insane offers and honestly, I'd pass.

And to be honest, I'm kind of worried about Philly. Holmgren is known to throw out long term contracts like it's nobody's business. Contracts that even Sather won't go near. They don't have the cap space now, but one simple trade and poof, they're in it.

If Philly wants to make another trade and gut their whole franchise for two players then let them.

That would be awesome...Christensen as the 1st line center, woohoo!

Seriously, this team is ****ed if Richards doesn't sign here—if they can get him on an annual cap hit of $7.5M or lower, they absolutely cannot say no.

The more I think about it, the more I lean towards this. I really dont want to sign a 31 year old man to a 7+ year contract.

edit: Just realized, in the world of Glen Sather, the bolded word does not exist.

I don't know but I'd still be completely shocked if Richards isn't a Ranger next season.

I don't know if I'm confident or cocky, but I have believed it for a long time that he will be a Ranger.
