Callahan's Agent Thinking Offer Sheet; Gap in Negotiations; Pot Shot at Richards

Quote:
[Callahan's agent] thinks this summer there’s potential for more offer sheets than usual and has a client in New York Rangers forward Ryan Callahan who would be an attractive target.

“The system we’re in gives an environment that makes it far more possible and likely than it was in the past,” Bartlett told Sporting News. “It shouldn’t be surprising in a cap system. Once you get in a position where you don’t have money to spend, you can’t protect all your assets.”

Bartlett posed this scenario -- a contender signs unrestricted free agent Brad Richards to a huge contract but finds itself right against the cap. Suddenly, that team is vulnerable to another GM poaching one of its attractive restricted free agents.

“A contending team would really have to squeeze to get Richards -- whoever does that could be subject to a flank attack,” he said.
Quote:
The Rangers and Callahan have had ongoing contract negotiations that Bartlett described as friendly and “somewhat productive.” But there’s a gap. “We’re still a ways apart. I don’t think anything is going to happen over the next few days. We’ll see what July 1 brings in terms of what the marketplace holds for him,” Bartlett said. Callahan, 26, would be an ideal candidate for an offer sheet considering his wide range of skills to go with his leadership abilities. He’s a future Rangers captain if somebody doesn’t grab him first. “I think a guy like Callahan would be a real attractive target with his age,” Bartlett said.
Do NOT like.

File for arbitration and do it now, imo. No reason to take chances.

well it is to be expected. Regardless he is not going anywhere and the will match. 4.5 at the max I would think his offer would be regardless

He didn't say Callahan will be an offer-sheet target, or that they're discussing offer-sheets. He basically just said, if there are offer-sheets to be thrown around, Callahan is the type of player GMs would use an offer-sheet on.

Not worried.

Not worried.
He said he thinks there's going to be more offer sheets this summer. He also said he thinks Callahan is a good offer sheet target. Taken together, clearly he's trying to use the threat of an offer sheet as leverage. However, if we just file for arbitration, there is zero threat of an offer sheet, so freaking do it.

Callahan wouldn't sign an offer sheet anyway unless its for a ludicrous amount of money. He wants to be here and we want him here.

No one will go after Sather...despite what fans may think of him Sather is a guy that other GMs just will not mess with.

So people who don't like Dubi because he held out, guess you really hate Callahan now.

It's just salesmanship. An agent is basically a salesman, who tries to drive up the price of his "product" as much as possible. Classic case of an agent twisting words and facts around to try to squeeze as much money as possible out of Sather for Callahan.

Not concerned. The Rangers know what they need to have in reserve for the RFAs they need to sign. If it forces those guys to take a little less to be on the team so be it, they'll probably comply.

You're comparing Dubinsky holding out into training camp to Callahan's agent speculating about an offer sheet?

I don't even...

No backlash against Callahan because they are "a ways apart" like there was last summer when Sather reported there was a chasm when negotiating with Staal? Color me surprised. Every homegrown RFA should be giving the team a hometown discount, don't cha know....

Anyway, Bartlett's dig towards a potential Richards signing is hilarious. "OK, Bartlett, you win... I am giving up any efforts to sign Richards because I am fearful that Callahan will be given an offer sheet. The $7 million set aside for Richards will now go towards matching offer sheets for Callahan." Yeah, I'm sure Slats is just shaking in his boots now!

Same garbage as last summer with Staal's agent Paul Krepelka looking for an offer sheet. The Rangers have $20 million in summer space which includes Callahan's $2.4M QO. Bring it *****es.

Big ups to all the people remembering Dubinsky.

Will be funny to see how it plays out, though, like Dubinsky, Callahan is going nowhere.

Still will be funny to see fan reaction.

Guaranteeeeeeeeeeeeeee everyone is on Cally's side if negotiations take a while and there's a rift.

But Dubiiiiiiiiii nooooooooooooooooooo. Tradeeeeeeeeeee him. What a dickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.

Thank you, that was the point I was trying to make. People still **** on Dubi for trying to maximize his earnings, but make excuses when Callahan tries to do the exact same thing.

It wasn't a big deal until Dubinsky held-out. Callahan has yet to do that.

I'm probably wrong, but I could've sworn that Staal's agent was Bobby Orr?
