I'm not worried about Callahan at the moment, but I definitely do think this will be a relatively active RFA season. There are definitely going to be a few surprises.
Apparently the Flyers are ready to offer Stamkos something like 12 years 115M.

Doubt it,

It will be a crazy year, though.

Is there a penalty to the team that offer sheets Cally, and we match it?

Not sure how the thread title is misleading -- although I would've definitely phrased it differently if there wasn't such a low character limit.

1) Callahan's agent is thinking that offer sheets are going to be more prevalent this off season, due to the rising salary cap, and that Callahan is a prime target for an offer sheet -- taken together, this suggests that he's at least considering the possibility of using the threat of an offer sheet as leverage

2) A gap between the two sides remains

3) The pot shot at Richards (really the pursuit of Richards, but I couldn't fit that) is the idea that any team that pursues him (and is close to the cap) risks seeing their RFAs being "poached" . . . which infers that, if you want to keep your RFAs, teams near the cap shouldn't be pursuing Richards

Yeah....but the Rangers are probably going to announce on Friday that they are taking Callahan and Dubinsky to arbitration. Teams aren't going to have the chance to offer either player an offer sheet.

A gap between the two sides is what sticks out to you but why isn't Callahan and Rangers having "friendly and productive" talks the thread title? Really, that's what we should be taking out of the thread. If there wasn't a gap in the terms of the contract Callahan would be signed already...

Frankly, the "pot shot" on Richards is a bit of an indictment on the agent. If I was Callahan I'd be pissed that my agent is possibly turning off prospective teams by trying to dictate to them what free agents to go after. Teams know the situations they are in better then an agent does. I don't think it's a pot shot on Richards as much as a stupid comment..

You're right on the pot shot thing. Like I said, it should've been referred to as a pot shot at the "pursuit of" Richards, but I didn't have any other characters to use in the title.

Regarding the second point, I think view "friendly and productive" as essentially a non-statement. Of course the negotiations are going to be friendly at this point. The fact that a gap exists is a lot more relevant, especially when needing to summarize the article in a few dozen character.

Will be funny to see how it plays out, though, like Dubinsky, Callahan is going nowhere.

Still will be funny to see fan reaction.

Guaranteeeeeeeeeeeeeee everyone is on Cally's side if negotiations take a while and there's a rift.

But Dubiiiiiiiiii nooooooooooooooooooo. Tradeeeeeeeeeee him. What a dickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.

It's funny, isn't it.

Both guys (Dubi and Cally) bleed Ranger Red, White and Blue. Both players lay their bodies out on the line almost every night and sacrifice themselves. Both players fear no one and always push back, fight back, defende themselves, defend their teammates and go after opponents who take liberties with teammates. Both players put up similar offensive numbers with Dubinsky putting up slightly better offensive points, than Cally. Dubi and Cally are best friends off the ice and on the ice.

But some how the Metrosexual portion of the Rangers' fanbase have a hrad-on for Cally, because they think he's "cute". So Dubi gets pissed on for no reason whatsoever, while Callahan (who is undoubtedly my top two favorite Ranger along with Dubi) gets grossly over-rated and exaggerated.

Welcome to Ranger Land.

I see the Dubinsky defenders are out in full force tonight. Two completely separate situations. This is Callahan's agent speculating his client would be a prized offer sheet candidate.

Either way not a big deal and I don't think the Richard's bit was a pot shot at anyone. Clearly he was using the only big money free agent as an example.

Yes there is. You have just crossed the New York Rangers and Glen Sather. Just wait until one of your stars is an RFA.

They are fairly close players on most terms. Dubi's inconsistency brings him down. Callahan is pretty much always on the ball 100%, whether or not the offense is there. That's more respectable then if you're on the ball 70% of the time with more offense. You get the picture.

I would venture to say that has a lot to do with it.

Exactly.

This is the ONE advantage of having Glen Sather as a GM.

Yes, the only one.

People who prefer Callahan to Dubinsky are metrosexual.

Well, I've heard everything now.

Callahan played 3/4ths of the season. 60 games. In those 60 he outdid Dubinsky (Who played 77) in

Hits (224 to 140)
Blocked Shots (77 to 31)
Goals Per Game (.38 to .31)
Points Per Game (.8 to .7)

All while averaging a minute less of ice time a game than Dubinsky.

Not worried, Cali would have to sign an offer sheet, and as much as his agent clearly wants him to do so if the oppurtunity arises I don't see him as the kind of guy that would do that to the team.

He actually sounds like a fool, IMO. Of course Sather is going to try to get Cally to commit to the longest/lowest numbers he can, but we're NOT in a position where signing Richards should compromise our ability to sign ANY of our RFAs so, unless someone signs Cally to a kind of ridiculous offer sheet, we'd just match in this case. Callahan is important to our organization and Sather knows it; most of us are predicting ~4M for Cally... we'll match anything in that ballpark. If someone wants to give him a 5M+ offer sheet... they're crazy. He's simply not that kind of player and I can't see him getting that kind of offer.
