yep. If we are going to spend 3.5 on a UFA forward I would rather spend it on what we need. a natural 3rd line center.

How long do you want him to remain a center, though? Assuming Couturier and Schenn are bound to remain at center, that forces both Briere and Giroux to the wing in a year or two.

JVR-Schenn-Giroux
Voracek-Couturier-Briere
Hartnell-Laich-Simmonds

I think Laich really is better at wing. He is a good face off guy though and is definitely a capable 3rd line center. That's part of the reason I wouldn't mind us to sign him, he can take that position this year if Schenn isn't ready and then move to wing the next year when either Schenn or Couturier will be there.

Any way they try out schenn or couturier at wing?

No idea. Don't really know enough about them yet. Giroux/Brière/Schenn/Couturier... one has to go to wing if we want to have them all on the roster at some point though.

I would guess that both the new kids will be tried on wing at some point.

I would imagine, than by the time couturier is able to hold a full time spot at center, Briere will be moved to wing. Until then, if couturier makes the team out of camp, I could see him and schenn taking turns winging and centering the 3rd line.

well I think Laich can fill that defensive forward need for the 3rd line and can play center or wing. Can Schenn fill that need at center? I dont know. Right now we are pretty weak down the middle. Laich would take care of that.
Schenn will have a cap hit of 3 million this season. Its the reason I want Laich. You know what you are going to get with him. We dont know what we are going to get with Schenn yet. Escpecially defensively which is what we need.

I'm more and more inclined to go with this thought as well. Schenn might be ready to play in the NHL, but it's a lot more questionable if he is ready to play as a 3M dollar guy.

Laich would be great on this team, no doubt. I said this in one of all the threads about the off season, can't remember which right now, if we keep Schenn up we likely can add one more forward in the 2.5-3M range, but if we give Schenn one year in the AHL we could perhaps add Laich and someone else for around 1.5M (I'd like Eaves... should be a little cheaper I think as well). That still leaves money for a replacement for O'Donnell on defense.

Flyers fans are just playing games, or then forgetting how good leino is.

I think he will put PPG now that richards and carter are away, cause he'll get more PP time.

He is hands down the beest free agent and worth every penny.

If flayers dont wont to sign him im sure there are many teams to take him with open arms. Imagine colorado is 20 mil under the floor, so if leino will test the market he is gone, and flayers lose.

flyers fans like Leino general feeling is just that he's asking too much.
he's not really any PP specialist but ofcourse any extra time could lead into the points. Also Carter's and Rich's PP minutes will be eaten by jvr and new guys also. Not to forget he cant play PK and not really 4v4 guy untill he's had a really good game. In any way he's not a piece Flyers would definetly need but a nice addition to have with not overpaying him.

for Flyers from 2.5 to 3 as absolute max imo, i think he's gonna kill his career with going after money now when he could just stay for lesser money now and have another opportunity to cash in later.

im a big Ville-fan but id rather have Cole, Laich or even J.Jokinen for the money hes wanting. Was fun while it lasted though
Skill-wise Leino >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Juseless, but 3m MAX for leino or GTFO

I totally agree, if you're choosing between these two I take Leino. Erik Cole is a scary idea. He was an okay idea to acquire at the deadline last season as a "rental". Leino has developed into a quality player. Heck if we're taking injury concerns, I'd still swing for the fences and try to get Gagne back. Better injured we know.

From Bill Meltzer's column on HockeyBuzz:

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Bill-...gency/45/36772

Quote:
Contrary to some reports, the Flyers have apparently finally made contact with the Ville Leino camp this week. A source close to the situation indicated that Paul Holmgren spoke with Leino's agent, Bill Zito, on Tuesday. As of yesterday, the two sides did not appear close to reaching an agreement.

Several times over the last week, Holmgren has indicated to the media that the club hopes to resign the impending unrestricted free agent. However, based on the fact that Holmgren did not make any contact with the Leino side -- either face to face or by telephone -- over the entire draft weekend, the comments appear to have been a stalling tactic more than anything else. The club is weighing other options while, at the same time, was hoping to keeo the Leino camp at bay by paying lip service to making a top priority of signing him by July 1.

As I wrote the other day, I think the ultimate decision is Leino's. He may prefer to stay in Philadelphia with all things being equal, but I also think that he's eager to see if there may be a better fit (read: more power play time and more money) under a different coach.

If no deal is struck today, I expect Leino to sign elsewhere. If he does not return, Erik Cole may be a viable UFA option to provide wing goal scoring on one of the team's top two forward lines. In addition, Jakub Voracek (who should be signed relatively soon) will be counted on to assume Leino's playmaking role, possibly taking his place on Danny Briere's line with Scott Hartnell. There is an outside chance that Simon Gagne could return to Philadelphia, but that would depend on how much of a pay cut he'd take off his now-expired $5 million per season deal.

leino loves philadelphia, and is probably just trying to see how high the flyers will go. if the flyers eventually tell him "we wont go any higher, go look elsewhere", i can see leino saying "wait wait wait, just kidding ill take it!"

for realz

With the cap raise, I'd offer Leino up to 4 million over 4 years. That's it. I really want him back, but we can only afford so much.

if Leino wants more then 3.25-3.5 then let him walk.
I guess today is the day we see if Holmgren does something stupid.
