These guys never retire. Fans always speculate about players with long term injuries retiring and getting their team out of cap hell, but how often does that actually happen when a player is still under contract?

Agreed, but it's not my money.

Good luck finding someone who wants to borrow him And I personally wouldn't let him anywhere near any of our young, developing defensemen, lest he somehow infect them.

LTIR makes his cap hit go away. Ted can afford the real money implications. No big deal here.

But didn't Nieuwendyk say they weren't looking to trade him anyway as they wanted to make the playoffs, which they would have done if they could have beaten a Wild team playing for absolutely nothing on the last day of the season?

Not exactly. LTIR only helps in the event that you're over the cap. You would be able to exceed it by Poti's salary. It's not as good as removing it entirely because you aren't banking any cap space throughout the year.

Insurance will take care of a large part of the real money but LTIR doesn't gain you cap space it just allows you to exceed the cap by that amount to replace him. If you aren't going to exceed the cap anyway then you gain nothing, meaning you are not accruing cap space to use later.

Or what ColincampbellOscopy said...

Ah right. What's the deadline to use his cap space, if he's LTIRed?

No better than Erskine IMO. Souray should not be an option either, even if he comes dirt cheap. Then again, they did draft a player terribly high whose shot was by far his best asset...

he'd be a bottom pairing guy.....plays a game similar to erk....fights more than erk at this point in his career. i'd be fine if the caps signed him to a cheap deal, even if he only ends up being a depth d-man...i've always liked his game.

I too have always liked Souray (when healthy). Hits, fights, shoots....would have to be cheap since he can't stay healthy.

I like that idea... cheap depth guy who can fill in for injuries if need be... Caps Aaron Rome so to speak?

Souray's lack of speed could be lethal. Even if he was cheating a bit because he was in the AHL, it was not pretty at times. Him in a PP specialist role isn't a bad idea… Everyone from Doug to ushers had nothing but great things to say about his personality too. Hell, if he takes out as many people from his bomb as he did in Hershey he's worth it.

If it was to a team he knew there was no chance he was going to sign with I guess I can understand it because that is screwing over that team.
