I have no doubt that most of these UFA's will get overpaid by at least a little bit. I hardly think a team is going to be walking away with a "fair" contract with how weak this free-agent market is.

You see, any other year and I'd share the same enthusiasm. This year it's like "Who can find the shiniest turds out of a dumpsite"? Harsh.

I'm not too worried about the Wild.

GMCF will sign a backup goaltender and a Dman only. Nothing more.

This. It's all about making your peace with it, like a family member's alcoholism.

As an Isles fan I'll GLADLY have my team overpay at a chance to land a quality defenseman.

After Ehrhoff and Wiznewski, who is left that is realistically a top 4 D on a playoff team? (Projecting the Isles to contend for a PO spot)

Nope. Doug Wilson is pretty good about not overpaying for UFAs. I haven't had to worry about overpayment on July 1 in half a decade (other dates, however, are still up for discussion)

I think Burke will have to over-pay if he wants to land Richards, because he will be competing with the king of overpaying.

They keep talking about Richards and all these offer sheets but watch as "THE ANTON" surpass them all for cap maxing flexibility.

Nah.

Can't get much worse than it did this time last week (eventhough I really love the moves we made, the shock value made me sick).

I think Leaf fans are in for Armstrong 2.0 this summer. Someone like Upshall on a 4-million-dollar contract. Maybe even another overpaid D-man to hang out with Komisarek on the third-pairing.

I'm absoultely terrified to wake up tomorrow and find the Kings have signed Arnott to a 3-year, $12m deal... or Alex Daigle for a bazillionty dollars or somesuch. God help stay Lombardi's quivering hand tomorrow.

As a Canucks fan, I'm more concerned that Gillis will sit back and do nothing to improve the team....

how about wallin??? and all though he traded for heatley same deal, mihalek at 4.3 and having another 3.2 million in cap space looks pretty good, although, not signed in free agency, might as well have been

No doubt, there is no one left in the open market. But this problem was caused of the CBA, since players become UFA at a younger age now, pretty much every second contact has become a long term contact, Carter/Richards/Vinny/ect. So I think its going to a lot like this for a while now. And to add, lets not forget that the cap is 64M now, thats a huge increase, Kopecky/Armsrtong(last year) are both 3 line players and the going rate for them now is 3M, so if Upshall goes for 3.5M, I don't really see it as an overpayment, if Cole gets 4-4.5M.

Or alternatively....spend a lot on a short term contract for Vokoun (1-2 years so you don't have any real cap issues created by it) and immediately become Cup favourites.
