I think you were confusing the two Florida teams... the Lightning are almost @ the floor already, the Panthers however are still a LONG way away.

I would bet his agent would advise against more than 7 years. If the cap does go higher yearly, his 8mil/yr salary could be a few mil below the rate for his level player in 10 years. Go for the 12 year deal when he's 28, get his money now and later. I'd go 7yr, 8 mil range, front load the hell of of it and see if stevie Y blinks.

It's also sometimes easier to tell if a D is ready to at least be steady, whereas a forward could put up a good stretch and fool you. Not that a defenseman can't, but usually you can tell right away if they don't belong.

Can the #Bolts close gap? Hearing bridge 2 get deal done might lie if #Lightning get to 8.5M AAV. That would put Stamkos in top 5 in #NHL

Just because you can offer anything doesn't mean you want to. By letting Stamkos test the market on July 1, you are only increasing the odds that Stamkos finds a max deal somewhere that you are forced to match. Surely that is not preferable to offering Stamkos 9/$81M sometime in the last few months and most likely ending this saga before it even began. I don't see how any of this is a part of Tampa Bay's "master plan" -- if anything it looks like a superstar player with all the leverage is pushing a small-market team to its financial limits.

So they're just waiting for the Flyers or someone else to force themselves to go that high? I guess it makes sense financially, but unavoidable IMO, might as well get it done instead of taking the chance on a ridiculous offer coming his way.

WIP is saying the Player Association is pushing Stamkos to take top $. Want him to wait for offer sheets...would have signed back with Tampa already otherwise.

Stamkos is a center and Incarcerated bob has never been right about anything.

I like where your head is at. 7 years actually looks better for both parties.

The "master plan" was hoping he would take a lower cap hit than he is likely going to. Here's the thing, though. Stamkos has no reason not to see what he gets on an offer sheet, and it isn't in the Bolts interest to move beyond what they want to pay until they ave to.

The cap numbers getting bandied about aren't all that appealing. No guarantee Stamkos doesn't get an offer with an AAV that the Bolts are fine with.

As long as they use the space wisely, solid depth fwds, a 3rd line center, maybe even another decent D. No shelley or walker nonsense.

And why the hell would they trade for a guy they can just off sheet to. If he's testing the market, then you are in the same boat as the bolts. You can't "sign & trade" in the NHL. If they trade him to the flyers, and some other team signs him, I'm guessing the flyers get the compensory pics. Or the trade varies if the flyers sign him, like if they sign him, they get players, if they don't they get the 4 firsts and a 5th or something. Actually that last sentence makes sense.

Thank God Homer and company.
