Ehrhoff will find that playing behind Roy, Vanek and Ennis is not quite like playing behind the Sedins and Kesler.

Okay, they are better on paper.

And they are much better coached than any of those Rangers teams. Ruff will find a way to get them to gel.

Not to mention their defense was the biggest weakness of that lineup. Although they are still weak at center.

That's the kind of contract I'd like the habs offer a little... Heavily front-loaded to reduce the cap hit, but they never do that.

Ex. I would give Richards a 55/60mil, 10 years deal front-loaded... That's the kind of offer that attracts big name free agent.

The whole Nhl is better than us. It's not like we have any superstars, a solid system and a pretty good core.
I really wonder how we'll get by this year..hoping we tank

Awaiting confirmation on this, but hearing Ehrhoff's deal in Buffalo is 10 years, $40 million. No clue yet on structure within that.
These contracts are getting ridiculous. I just don't know what to say. Pretty soon you're going to start seeing 3rd and 4th line players sign 10 year contracts.

Do you think all NHL'ers who haven't won the Stanley Cup are chokers, or only those who have come closest?

If that's all you see when you watch the Sedins and Kesler, you are missing some great, great hockey.

Nah, we're just jelly because our GM hasn't done the same. If we can get Price signed at a 4M cap hit for like 8-10 years, I'm sure we'd be happy.

Then again, goaltenders are much more "recycled" than forwards, but I believe Price is a franchise goalie and will stick around for long.

Rather not lock up any of our players for over 5 years, too risky.

Agreed. Some teams have found takers for their gambles (Carter, Richards), others have not (Lecavalier). I don't think there is much of a market for Kovalchuk right now.

What until the US rebounds and the Canadian dollar becomes worth less. The cap will go down and it will be mayhem.....

Teams should not be expecting the cap to increase 12% every year.....League revenues were only up 1% I read and yet the cap went up 12% mostly due to the strength of the Canadian dollar.

Wait until the dollar is worth 80 cents again (If the US can get their act together) and the cap falls 12%.

I think we will be liking our shorter term contracts.

Now i'm looking at the breakdown of the deal and it's equally perplexing:

Year 1: $8M signing bonus, $2M salary; Year 2: $5M SB, $3M sal. That's $18M in 1st 2 yrs, or $15M before puck drops on 12-13 season. #tsn

I feel like Regier spent the whole day reading the CBA to figure out a way of making all this possible, lol.

You wouldn't give Price or Subban a deal over 5 years?

Maybe not Subban right now because he's just coming out of his first contract and if we give him 2-3 years we can still retain his RFA status, but Price?

If Price has another year like last year, on a 5 year deal, he'd cost 6M+ on the cap.

I almost think the NHL should make things really complicated and use a 3 or 4 year moving average cap hit.

So for Erhoff it would be as follows

10+8+4+4 = 6.5M
8+4+4+4 = 5M
4+4+4+4 = 4M
4+4+4+3 = 3.75M
4+4+3+1 = 3M
4+3+1+1 = 2.25M
3+1+1+1 = 1.5M
3+1+1+1 = 1.5M
3+1+1+1 = 1.5M
3+1+1+1 = 1.5M

It would bias the contract more towards the actual salary of the player and make their cap hit low enough in the final years that they would want to keep them. So players wouldn't be as fast to accept since they might have to actually play those final years and not just sit at home and collect money.

But alas, I haven't really thought this through and I am sure many will find a way to circumvent this model as well.

I guess restrictions between year to year salary is the best way, to make sure there is no funny business, but I think this would be a good compromise between players and owners.

We now know why the nucks ended talks with Ehrhoff. It's a ridiculous contract.

Just as there is a limit on dollar, there ought to be a limit on term as well.

No kidding.

I highly doubt he's the kind of player that will maintain high-level of play beyond the age of 35. He might even tail off before that.

I was hoping to see the Habs in on him in the 5-5.25M range over 4-5 years, but no way would I have endorsed this type of deal.

Same. I thought it reasonable to give Ehrhoff a similar contract to Hamrlik in 07-08, but I would be pissed if PG did or does something like this.
