Ehrhoff agrees to a deal with Buffalo. Pretty funny how no one wants to play for NYI

10yrs 40m isn't a contract you would have to resort to questionable or borderline circumvention tactics on.

Tim Pannaccio, likely the best Flyer reporter, is where the reference to the Flyers not pursuing Richards comes from...in terms of Flyers' matters, I'll take Pannaccio over Garrioch.

The Sabres may likely drive up the price on Richards, but, I still believe he ends up with the Rangers.

I feel like with all these long term contracts being handed out, unless there are some major changes in the next CBA, there will be fewer and fewer quality UFA's every summer (like this one this year). I feel there will be more trades then UFA signings down the road if these contracts continue.

That said, I can't wait for noon tomorrow to roll around!

Year 1: $8M signing bonus, $2M salary; Year 2: $5M SB, $3M sal. That's $18M in 1st 2 yrs, or $15M before puck drops on 12-13
Erhoff gets almost half of the entire 10 year contract's value in the first 2 ****ing years. Great job fixing cap circumvention when you had the chance with the Kovalchuk fiaso, Gary.

Not bad for the 106th pick in 2001.

Damn Buffalo is looking REALLY good next year, if they sign Richards, they are my pick for NE division champs and maybe even SC finalists.

So he will play for 7 years, and collect 37 million, not too bad.

You're thinking of performance bonuses (only for 35+, players coming off injuries, and ELCs).

Anyone can get a signing bonus.

Agreed on all counts. The Flyers couldn't sign him unless they magically get rid of Versteeg and Meszaros

You're ignoring the 10% salary cap overage during the summer. They could definitely sign him and move money out later if they desired.

They still have to re-sign Voracek, Simmonds and Leino, (whom they have said they have every intension of re-signing). That's anywhere from $9-10 million in potential cap hits right there. They likely still have to move a Versteeg just to be able to re-sign those three players.

Erhoff deal looks even more ******** than the Kovalchuk deal. Here is the breakdown for each.

Kovalchuk:
Erhoff:

10 year contract for Ehrhoff. Okay. Think about what he would have gotten if he hadn't been a minus-13 in the playoffs. #lifetimedeal
Seriously.

On the bright side, for the next NHL lockout, Rangers fans will get to sit on the high horses blaming teams like Buffalo and NJ.

18 million in the first two years of the contract....this is Christian Ehrhoff we're talking about, right? Insanity.

at least we know how Buffalo is gonna approach tomorrow going after Richards. They're gonna drive the price up, insanely.

I don't understand, Erhoff isn't even worth a contract like that. Absolutely ridiculous contract.

What the people claiming that this doesn't violate the Kovalchuk Amendment and therefore isn't cap circumvention fail to realize is that there is still a general prohibition on cap circumvention independent of the Kovalchuk Amendment.

Even after the Kovalchuk Amendment, section 26.3 of the CBA states:

Quote:
(a) No Club or Club Actor, directly or indirectly, may: (i) enter into any agreements, promises, undertakings, representations, commitments, inducements, assurances of intent, or understandings of any kind, whether express, implied, oral or written, including without limitation, any SPC, Qualifying Offer, Offer Sheet or other transaction, or (ii) take or fail to take any action whatsoever, if either (i) or (ii) is intended to or has the effect of defeating or Circumventing the provisions of this Agreement or the intention of the parties as reflected by the provisions of this Agreement, including without limitation, provisions with respect to the financial and other reporting obligations of the Clubs and the League, Team Payroll Range, Player Compensation Cost Redistribution System, the Entry Level System and/or Free Agency.
I think the structure of this contract, although not in violation of the Kovalchuk Amendment would be enough to warrant serious examination if presented before the arbitrator.

NHL should absolutely bring this before the arbitrator and stop allowing teams to run roughshod over the CBA.

So maybe Buffalo is forced to lose a 1st round pick.

The Kovalchuk contract that was rejected by the league was also voided, multiple picks (1st + 3rd) were forfeited, and a ~$4m fine was imposed.

This deal isn't the same type of circumvention as the Kovalchuk deal, but it's arguably circumvention regardless.
