GDT: William & Kate Visit Canada / Coming to L.A.!

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...n-royal-visit/

Quote:
Prince William and Kate tried out their French in public and put on their best British charm for screaming Canadians as the royal newlyweds began their first official overseas trip Thursday.

Poised and confident, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as they are formally known, thrilled the crowds with warm, unscripted gestures, wading into throngs of well-wishers to shake hands and accept flowers and other gifts.

To cheers of delight, William addressed his hosts in both English and French, then cracked a joke about his language skills. “It will improve as we go on,” the prince quipped, then noted how much he and Kate were “truly looking forward to this adventure.”

“Catherine and I are so delighted to be here in Canada. Instilled in us by our parents and grandparents, who love this country, we have been looking forward to this moment for a very long time _ and before we were married, we both had a longing to come here together,” he said at the residence of the governor general of Canada.

Quote:
If their first day is any indication, the royal couple will have a huge following all across the continent. Thousands of people gathered in front of the National War Memorial and at Rideau Hall, their second stop in the Ottawa area.

People from around Ottawa as well as outside the country had gathered at both locations, carrying signs, photographs of the couple and royal paraphernalia.

The couple will be in Canada for nine days. Here's a look at their itinerary:

June 30-July 2: National Capital Region (Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec)
July 2: Montreal
July 3: Quebec City
July 3-4: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
July 4: Summerside, Prince Edward Island
July 4-6: Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
July 6-8: Calgary, Alberta

I bet there will be plenty of Fish and Chips and Poutine to be exchanged when this is all said and done. What is the point of this useless visit anyway?

I see no problem with the royals visiting beloved former colony Canada. After all, Canada loves their royals.

And to say that my parents want to go drive to Ottawa tomorrow. It's going to be a mess driving into town and finding parking...

Could care less. They are largely unimportant and irrelevant. I can't believe the coverage they have been getting. It's been some slow news months. They don't do anything, yet are very popular with media and some sheep people in Canada.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge landed in Ottawa to thousands of royal watchers and red carpet treatment at the Ottawa Airport, then the National War Memorial.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife, Laureen, served as their tour guides, joining the couple in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Dozens of fans arrived more than nine hours early for a front-row seat, including 50-year-old Francine Dorion, who leaned over the barricade in keen anticipation of Will and Kate's first international visit.

"I made a painting for them and I hope to give it to them. A nice little present from people from Canada," said Dorion, who planted herself at 5 a.m. Thursday.

...

As the couple walked along the barricade, many royal watchers also had big grins, especially Dorion after Kate stopped and accepted her painting.

"Especially up close and receiving that gift, oohhh, it's exciting. I'm very excited," she said as she watched a fellow fan's recording of the exchange.

When I saw the thread title, I was absolutely sure that Charlie Milles had started it. Sometimes, you get genuinely surprised.

I work downtown at the chateau laurier bro. the route was right outside. as I was walking past the crowds you could quickly make out that most of the people there were women and kids. I guarantee you most of them no nothing about monarchy in Canada on a constitutional level, and are merely sightseeing.

Yeah, I would have assumed there would be a lot of teen to 20-something girls that were there because they read about Kate in People Magazine and like her style, etc.
