I've had people at past jobs tell me hockey is a joke and football or baseball is the greatest thing ever.
The way i see it is, we hockey fans know hockey will never be THE sport, and will always be second fiddle to NCAA Football and NFL, and MLB... but we love our sport, we are loyal rabid fans. And our sport isnt going anywhere, and neither are we.
I want to see where THEY will be after a lockout.
Hockey is like a cult thing...sorta. It's weird, it seemed so much bigger when I first started watching (when I was 8 in the late 80s); maybe it's because I grew up on Long Island for over a decade but the rivalry was intense and EVERYONE in my school, day camp, grownups, etc. was either with the Rangers, Islanders, or occasionally you'd get a Devils fans.
But back to the cult thing; Mouth from Blueshirt Banter/Underground had a great analogy; the NHL has become a really cool band that's not quite mainstream (I was just listening to Husker Du today go figure) but the real fans get it and know how great it is.
Football is the number one sport and it's so easy to follow with only one game a week and the buildup.
Baseball; once again, maybe it was my innocence but I just don't have the same kind of passion for it. Used to love the game in the late 80s but it's just too much for me now, not fast enough, and my friends kill me with fantasy baseball like 3x a day checking scores and talking about WHIP. THAT is a sport that needs a cap worse than any others. I've been to Kansas City twice and they love the Royals but they can't even compete with the Rays yet alone the Yankees/Red Sox/Mets/Phillies. The Brewers have been to the playoffs twice in my lifetime and once was when Mike Rogers and Mark Pavelich were lighting up MSG
How's the NFL lockout going? I think a week or so ago they said both sides were close to an agreement?
Last I heard the two sides are still talking frequently, and seem friendly. While they're close to hammering it through, according to some ESPN sources it was talked that they would end the lockout before an agreement was reached in order to continue football and training camps especially - and they'd just continue to negotiate as the season begins. But that was quickly rebuffed because of no side wants to tentatively agree to a deal, end the lockout, and then talks fall apart and the season have to abruptly stop or something.
tl;dr Close, but no cigar. Don't trust each other, still want more money.
The NFL better fix this thing soon or just call it a season because that sport needs training camp or else there can be serious injuries.
Just happy being a Giants fan that the 3rd round pick Jerrel Jernigan went the way of Krieder and got to finish college. He was the first in his family
After NFL, NBA, and MLB, pundits rip hockey/NHL for the lockout... im loving the NFL and potential NBA lockouts.
Not really NFL or MLB, just NBA. Like when Stephen A Smith (NBA commentary) the racist from ESPN who said he "could care less about the white mans sport hockey" and "hoped that the lock out lasted a full season" in 2004-2005.
I would love for the NBA to vanish from pro sports for good. Its a joke and just because the flack all the NBA people gave the NHL, I really hope that the lock out lasts for years and the league crumbles and falls apart. Lets see what Lebron james would have to say then and what he would have to shoot his mouth of about that dumb mother****er. Its ashame because there are a few good guys in the NBA, Dirk, Steve Nash, Paul Gasol... thats about it. (hey hey I said a few)

Im not happy with the Jets first round pick for... lets call it personal reasons that I would get most likely banned or at least a few infractions for saying. (and no it has nothing to do with him being black)
im so indifferent about the nba i could care less if they ever played a game again and what their stupid fans think. hockey is too difficult for those idiots to understand, they know hockey is a much tougher sport to play and more exciting so they of course have to do whatever they can to put it down. karma is a you know what....they said things about the nhl lockout, well heres payback

Hopefully the NFL comes back, but I could care less if the NBA never plays another game. I also highly doubt the Rangers/hockey get more popular because of it. ESPN will still cover the lockouts more than they talk about hockey.

MLB is the one that should get a lockout. Half those players, with their fat *****, can't comprehend what physicality means, and some earn more than an NHL, NFL, or NBA player.

Well that's because it isn't as much of a problem to be overweight in the MLB than it is in other sports. I doubt there will be a lockout in the MLB, since the teams who have gigantic payrolls still make gigantic profits, so I doubt they have a big of a problem with it to start a lockout.

I just find it irritating that a baseball player can earn more than a football, basketball, or hockey player.
Walks to home plate, takes three swings, scratches his ass while walking to the dugout, chews bubble gum. Oh yeah, that's a $150 million commodity right there!
We used to have the "October Classic," but they figured a way to push it into November. The sport has too many games. 500 games is ridiculous...and that's not including the postseason.

And Joe Buck. **** him!
162 games and if the NHL made as much money as the MLB, then hockey players will get paid as much as baseball players.

I know it's not 500 games, I was over-exaggerating.
Yes, hockey could do a lot more, like having as many games in a season as baseball, teams getting their own channels, raising ticket prices, charging an arm and a leg for food and drinks.

It's a start.
the stadiums also hold ~40-50k ppl whereas most NHL stadiums are in the 15-20k range.
it just makes more sense. baseball is more popular, the stadiums hold more than double the amount of ppl, and they play double the amount of games, in addition to the games almost always last 33% longer. the only thing the NHL has over MLB is that the playoffs are significantly longer...except players dont get paid for the playoffs, theyve earned their salary for the regular season, they play for free after that.
Its interesting how the tables turn. This may have a small effect in terms of marketing and sales but when it comes to the big picture I don't think it will have much of an effect. I don't think there are a lot of nba fans who will convert to hockey fans. Just means NYR will always be on MSG and not a backwater channel

You forgot to mention how it's the most boring game in earth.
