Unless he signs tomorrow, in which case it wouldn't be classified as "re-signing" but as "signing", thus negating the condition to improve the draft pick.

Ahem...

http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=567711

The seventh round pick will become a fifth round selection in 2012 if Columbus signs Wisniewski (pronounced wihz-NOO-skee) prior to the 2011-12 season.

I'm not sure how bad Detroit giving either Ehrhoff or Wisniewski a big contract would be all that much of a panic move. There's a weak UFA crop this year, and not much better next year. Detroit has a lot of cap space and has some holes in the lineup that either player could fill.

*shrugs*

Sounds like there's a good chance both Ehrhoff and Wisniewski might not even make free agency though.

Detroit will then go about it's business.. They'll sign a Kaberle for a couple years and maybe another depth guy... Maybe they'll turn their attention to forwards and trade for a Dman.... Or, they'll stop-gap till the trade deadline. The Wings arent the panic type organization...

I don't think Wiz would be bad for the wings he can add that swagger they have been missing for years that physical pesty player. I remember last year when it was rumored that they were going to go after Eric Boulton for some much needed grit but atlanta signed him hours in free agency but he is now a FA again so well see.

Look at this beautiful coast, leaving Hammer high and dry:

For the record he was playing injured and prior to the injury had looked much better defensively than on previous teams.

He really upped his defensive game with us I know on the isles and when injured he was awful. But believe when I say this at least under our coaching they made him play well. He's a coachable player. I see Detroit signing him if CBJ doesn't.

If Columbus doesn't, Buffalo might try JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT. Can't tell me that Wisniewski wouldn't now jump at the chance of playing in Buffalo after seeing their 2 recent transactions, would be the most solid defensive core for the next season IMO.

Would suck a little for the bottom pairing though, someone would have to be K.O.'ed.

Anyways, I know a signing with Buffalo won't happen but ******* if it did.

That's exactly what I can tell you. Why would he want to play on the bottom pairing in Buffalo when he could play in his home state in the top 4 for the Red Wings??? And where is Buffalo going to get this magical cap space too?? They only have 7 million to spend now.

True, but Lidstrom is done after this season (most likely). The FA pool next year is weak. I'm one of the few Hawks fans that wants Detroit to be as competitive as they've been for a decade. Signing Wiz would be good for Detroit, bad for the rest of our division.

I don't buy injury as an excuse. A lot of his problems have to do with positioning. How is a physical problem manifesting itself in major mental lapses?

My guess is that he was playing just as poorly but was lucky enough to not get burned on his defensive lapses and therefore not get nearly as scrutinized in that zone.

Because sometimes something that you're quick to judge as a "defensive lapse" may possibly be poor execution? Injuries don't negatively impact your execution?

I'm talking about major mental lapse (leaving the front of the net when you shouldn't), that's not a type of mental lapse that is a cause of poor execution (and therefore some physical ailment). That's just a guy who doesn't think the game well.

Just when you think Wings fans are getting better. . . - oh wait - I wasn't thinking that at all.
