There are reports we are shopping gomez, and we are obviously going to be a tirekicker for brad richrads. what if he were to express interest in us, and gomez was able to be traded? there is hope. it could even be done without trading gomez, in fact there's enough room for us to add gagne, richards, talbot and belanger without even moving him. We'd just probabley have to move him next year.
It was back in 1975 and the Habs played the Flyers in an exhibition game. The Flyers were the Broad Street Bullies, but they also had talent. The Habs had loads of skilled, fast players. The Flyers pounded the Habs physically and beat us in the game. Scotty Bowman blasted the team after the game for not standing up for each other and fighting back. There was another exhibition game betwwen the teams. This time the Habs had brought up some huge boys from the AHL who could scrap. Habs killed the Flyers. It was a turning point. We could beat the Flyers with our skill but we also needed to be able to play a physical game, and we knew we could do that.
So today, we have we have been building a fast and skilled kind of team. In todays NHL you dont need to be able to win bench clearing brawls or even have enforcers. But its still a physical game. Teams like the Bruins, Flyers are considerd to be big, tough teams. Thing is, its a bit of an illusion. These teams do have some big and tough players like Lucic etc, but really its just a few if you look at the line-ups. Alot of it is just regular sized or just a bit bigger guys that just play tough and will hit.
You need all kinds of players to be successful . We could sign some decent players, but it will really be adding more of the same. We NEED some size and players who will hit and therefore extract a physical toll on the other team. We NEED , not goons, but guys who can and will fight ( and win the fight ) if somebody takes liberties with one of our players, not just have a little pushing match as our guy lays on the ice. You know, Iginla ones cruised by our bench and offered to drop them with anybody , and we had nobody to step up. Talk about deflating the team.
We have needed these types of players and it is time we got them. There are players of this type available, we just need a few to add to Maxpac, White and Moen. I dont want more of the same even if theyre good players, especially if it ties up multi-millions for years. If Cole is viewed as somebody who can play at his level for a few more years sign himm for our top 6.If no, then look at trades, but dont spend money on just another decent player for the top 6. No excuse to not add toughness for the bottom 6 ie Torres, Rupp.
All it will take is 2-3 big physical guys more and we will be a different and better team. And for bottom 6 it will just take Moen kind of money. This team has character already but will play even bigger. The Bruins got Horton and I always thought he was A very good big player, but was soft. He went to the Bruins with their play tough culture and all of a sudden hes become tougher and becoming a true power forward.
GO BIG OR STAY HOME PG' dont burn our cap space for fillers, get what we need.
Brad Richards, he is good, but we aren't in that race, plus don't know if I would want the Habs putting that in one player when it could be put in two good players like Leino and Cole.
Hope the Habs try to get Jagr, and/or another bigger scoring forward like Cole. If the Habs can trade Gomez some how, it would be ideal to see a centre coming back or go out and try our luck with a Leino too.
PG isn't a big UFA or Trade Deadline guy, Burke, Sather, Holmgren live for this day.
1-relatively big name for the top 6(3.5-5 mil)
2-not so big name on defense to play 20 minutes in a #4 role(2-3.5 mil)
3-2 non big name on the 4th line for toughness(700k-1.1 mil), plus a 4th line center(700k-1.2 mil).
No no according to some of our great fans, our owner wants to save some money..
I wouldn't be surprised to see the habs 5M below cap once all is said and done. Not because our owner is cheap though. Simply because I have a hard time seeing who is left on the market that could get the habs to the cap unless we do crazy things like 3M for 3rd liners. Hope I'm wrong.
BTW, the above figure is pure guess work. There's definitely lots that could happen to get the habs to the cap. I just have a hard time imagining PG doing it.

That's a very silly argument that means absolutely nothing. He bought it because it was a sound decision financially. It has to keep being a sound decision financially or steps will be taken for that to be the case. I don't have the numbers in front of me so we can't discuss this intelligently but what you said is simplistic at best.
