Plus, if he doesn't put up points, at least we have a way to neutralize the Blackhawks...

Detroit could've signed him to an identical deal and would've been praised some of those who are complaining about the CBJ.

Wiz was clearly the best puck moving PPQB d-man available, and the only one of note under the age of 33. He was going to get his money somewhere, we should be glad it's here. Someone would have given him 5.5 mil somewhere.

Had to be done, with such a limited pool of FA d-men Howson had to know that there will not be as many trades after the initial FA period signings.

Wisniewski was the best option. The Jackets are a better *much better?* team with him than without him.

But he is overpayed.
So is pretty much every NHLer

I agree. It was a great signing.

But he is overpayed. I don't really care, though, because 1) It's not my money, 2) I don't need it now, 3) we don't spend to the cap.

I share CJFs begrudging acceptance of the deal for the same reasons he's listed. I'm not going to fault Howson because the market is leading too some crazy deals. I'm sure that someone else would have given him similar money if we hadn't. But he's still overpayed.

WHEN a player is a free agent is always the factor that seems to be forgotten in these discussions every year. It isn't just a factor of who the player is.

The cap goes up every year which means salaries go up every year. So generally speaking, this year's UFAs are going to make more than last year's regardless of who is in that class.
Then you factor in the market, which as has been pointed out around here, was dwindling rapidly for the type of player Wiz is.

The deal certainly isn't a steal and there is an element of gambling (but how many contracts don't carry some risk??).
But this deal is fair.

Lets face it.. we have not had successful hockey in

Columbus yet.. made the playoffs once in 10 years. We have never had a pmd that can bring the puck out of our end or flip a good two line pass / or when we did we did not have the pieces to finish. Through the decade the rules changed as well making our weakness on the blue line even more glaring.

We have needed a good right shot from the point for a # of years.. who gives a crap what anyone says about his contract. We had to land JW, and he and his agent knew it. Did you think he was going to give us a discount?

Busy OMG kinda morning!! I am thrilled. I think Howson's theme song should be "How Do You Like Me Now! Good job Scott. Good job. And I don't think he's done.

As for overpaying....

I don't think it's overpaying if you got what you wanted. It's all about value. Wiz is worth this much to us at this point in time. I mean seriously, if you want to keep dragging in bargain players, then you are going to have a bargain team. We want to win. It's time to play with the big boys who have deep pockets. And let the folks on the Main's piss and moan. We got him and they didn't.

Win. So full of win that there isn't an emoticon that suits how hard I laughed when I saw this.

You sir, deserve massive kudos for coming up with that idea.

So it looks like Detroit also out on Jagr. I wonder if Howson has some tricks up his sleeves

At this point, we're just getting into semantics and it's not worth it for something I really don't have massive objections to, but I'm going to have to disagree with calling this fair here. Necessary, absolutely. But I'm not sure I'd use fair.

But as I have conceded, the market is insane this year. I'd normally perfer to see Howson walk away from any deal where the market value is significantly higher than the intrinsic value. But that really wasn't an option here.
