anyone second guessing PG about not 'pursuing' wiz now? i mean, most people seem surprised at his contract, but if he wasn't looking for such a risky deal (6 years at 5+, know for defensive brain farts?), he would of been a hab by now.
Can you just admit that maybe, Gauthier(a hockey professional) might know what he's doing?

It's funny because the same people who complained about not retaining Wiz would have been the first to complain over this type of deal stating that "Gauthier has lost his mind"/"another overpaid contract"/"our Gm doesn't know how to manage money" and all that other crap.

It's a huge overpayment for a guy who hasn't proven he can do what he did for more than one season.
He's getting paid 250k less than Markov. Got the same salary has Hamrlik(which many of you admitted to be an overpayment and Hamrlik is a much superior defensemen to Wisniewski) and is getting paid more than Plekanec(yes I know not comparable since one is a D and the other is a forward).
Wisniewski got top 2 d-man money. Wisniewski is not a top 2 d-man. He is a puck-moving powerplay specialist with average defensive play.
Wisniewski type deals would hurt teams like the Canadiens in the long-run rather than help them.
People get turned on by points, which blinds them. Like I said, he got the same cap hit as Hamrlik, a contract which every complained was an overpayment. Wisniewski's all around game doesn't come anything close to Hamrlik's. Hamrlik can actually fill in temporarily as a #1 minute eating D and give your team a chance. If Wisniewski is your#1 even temporarily, you're in trouble.

Columbus is giving 5.5 X 6 for a 27 year old d-man with offensive capabilities.
By dropping Harmlik, they could had been able to sign him.
Next year Gill & Spacek will be gone and motre than 6 million $ would had been available. Even with raises to Price and Subban, there could had been still lots of extra money to pay Wiz.
Problem I see is, In CBJ will he be a first pairing guy? Because he is clearly not that. At his best you have him sheltered with a good defensive dman on the second pairing.

One was a defensive beast, leader to young D's, good enough offensive capabilities. The other is an offensive bomb but a defensive bomb. They are not even comparable, not to mention 2 more years in contract length is big difference.
I would have preferred Weber develop and be a cheap replacement anyways.
I'm excited about this season because of the following reasons:
1) No Hammer - I like him but him not being there means Weber/Emelin play.
2) Possible UFA signings in the top and bottom 6.
3) We didn't waste money locking up Wiz long term when Weber could potentially be a cheap replacement for years to come. The kid has something to prove and imo this is his year.
As mentionned, that's an overpayment for Wiz...If he would have signed at that amount for say..3 years, it wouldn't be so bad. Those who are saying that they would have signed him at that amount, I don't know what you're smoking. The NHL's current collective bargaining agreement comes to an end in about a year I think. Who know's what going to happen after that. Also, you have to look into the future...this years free agent crop sucks, but what if a big name becomes available a year from now or 2 years from now, and we can't offer a competitive to a highly sought after player because we have Wiz signed to a 6 year deal worth 33 million..Most of us would be up in arms.
I have no problem paying that amount to a proven commodity, but come on. Wisniewski was good for us last year, but he bounced around to 4 teams in the last 4years, that can't be a good sign. Also, he's never had success like this before. How pissed would we be if he scored 30 points next year while being below average on defence. We'd be paying 5.5 million for 6 years for a number 4-5 dman.

Markov is worth considerably more on the open market and signed for less primarily due to injury. If he has played two full seasons, averaging within the 55-65 point radius. We would be paying him well in excess of six million. Based on his season with us, Wisniewski was the better of the two between him and Hamrlik. You are significantly undervaluing him by claiming Hammer is "much better" especially when you factor in how many blunders Hamrlik makes on given average. Defensively, yes he one ups Wisniewski to a certain extent but offensive, Wis takes the cake.
If he continues his success with us in Columbus. We basically watched a 50 point defenseman walk for a fifth round pick. Frankly, I am not convinced we could not have retained him for five million. Gauthier does not like long term deals or spending and it shows.

Or we got a 5th round pick for a player we had no intention of signing. We could have let him walk for free like we've done every other year with notable Free agents.
