2 year deal means he's guaranteed to be the #1 when Carey's contract is over next season.

Eh, he won't play much games anyways. He's a goalie that can look fantastic one night, and brutal the next.

Budaj has had a few bad years in Colorado, but he's been fine when placed in a real backup role and not expected to play beyond that. Don't agree with the general opinion here that he's awful.

This couldn't be more inaccurate if you tried, sorry. Auld was one of the better backups in the NHL. Had experience, was great in the room, got along great with Price.

Budaj could barely hold onto a back-up job in Colorado and was an absolute disaster whenever he had to start games consistently. Frankly I'm shocked he even got an NHL contract. From us, no less.

Whatever, so long as you aren't getting someone horrible backups are largely interchangeable.

feel the same...

and it's not even a good deal for us. Budaj shouldn't be earning over 1M$, especially not when Boucher signs for 2 years/1.9M at about the same time.

does the habs management not get the information everyone else gets? there are so many average goalies out there, why rush to sign one on day 1? why not wait at least a week or so, where Budaj and others of his caliber would be desperate just to stay in the NHL.

it's not big problem given how small the cap hit is, but the it points yet again to some questionable decision making by our management team

Why didn't we waited a few days and signed a desperate guy for something like 600 to 800K. 1,1 is a too high cap hit for someone who will played 10-15 games.

Still a bunch of guys available like Auld, Elliot, Conklin, Turco etc.

On second thought, maybe it's not awful. He had passable number for a backup in 45 games with the Avalanche. Hopefully he does a little bit better in about 15-20 games with the Habs.

You'll be fine with him as long as he's backup. He's terrible starter, but as backup he's fine.

P. S.

FYI, he owns Dallas .

Wondering if he still will get it behind his Habs mask.

Exactly. Colorado fans hate him because he played 45 games and truly, he is a backup goalie rather then a spot-starter.

i'm okay with this. I always thought Auld looked a bit shaky last year, even when he won. Budaj is a bit better imo. can't really complain about this, even though he's not your typical back-up.

Don't mind this at all. Budaj isn't that bad a goalie and has enough NHL experience to be a stabilizing factor. I don't get the overreaction.

So he's "just" a backup uh? lol. You are embarrassing. That guy could be playing up to 20 games next year. We're not exactly a team that can afford throwing points away

Yup, he's a decent backup goalie. I think he's being underrated here.

I like him better than Auld actually.
