Nice signing...if it was 2006. An over the hill, no-knee Sturm IN - Torres OUT = a softer team that got physically abused in the Finals.

Hopefully this is what is intended, but the money is what is scaring a lot of people. A trade must be in the winds, or May Ray and possibly Sammy are going to be out for much longer.

Raymond-Kesler-Higgins

Oreskovich-Lapierre-(Hansen?)

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Salo
Ballard-Tanev/Alberts

Luongo
Schneider

Not a bad lineup. I still hope Gillis trades for another winger. If he does and everyone's healthy, we'll have the deepest group of forwards in the NHL, by far.
Depth is good - but the team needs were not more 2nd line/3rd line tweeners. We have enough of those already.

We needed a) legit top 6 talent to complement Kesler and/or b) a bit more size.

Really dislike this signing.

Let's hope Gillis has something else cooking - to ship Raymond out or something.

So far this team is worse than last year. Down Ehrhoff, Torres and up Sturm. Bad.

WTF were we not after Ben Eager? That's what they need on the 4th line.
A hot head who costs his team a playoff game and gets benched for the remainder? YEAH!

Raymond is going to be on the IR for the next six months and probably won't be going anywhere until the deadline at the earliest. With how Gillis shored up defense last off-season, I see this as him shoring up our forwards this off-season. Strum is likely going to be a short term Raymond replacement on the second line until Raymond returns or Gillis finds a better fit.

So we get softer with Sturm and don't address our 2 needs top 6 winger and Rugged/Battle harden 4th line winger. I hope 2012-2013 ufa crop is better than this crap.

Fairly upset with this signing, I see no need for a move like this. I hope Gillis' hunch pays off, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now but my initial reaction is not happy.

Canucks are good about doing their homework.. I think if there was big concern about his health, the signing would not be made.

As someone said , could be a raymond repalcement for now.

If Sturm can come in and score 15-20 goals, and raymond comes back, the forward group is deeper than they were at the start of last year.

When I first heard we signed Sturm I didn't like it. Once I heard the $$$ I hate it!

WTF, is Gillis thinking?! I would have much rather not signed anyone than sign Sturm today.

Really hope Gillis isn't done because this team is definitely worse than last years, not to mention teams around them will get better. Not happy about this.

Ok, I leave the house confident in Gillis to be patient and wait on a good deal through offer sheet or trade, I return home 30 minutes later and I nearly vomit in my mouth. WFT is he thinking? Terrible move. I don't get it. Are they prepared to bury him in the minors in the event of an injury or something? Mind boggling.

I really hope that's the case and we ship Sturm out for a 3rd or something in February. *sighs*.

People on these boards have no idea how to build a hockey team, or else they have no idea what kind of player Sturm is.

you would rather the canucks have signed Joel Ward to a 4 year, 12 mil contract, than take a flier on Sturm at 1 year 2.25? interesting.

can always dump sturm to the ahl if he doesn't work out...only a one year deal

This has to be a "depth" signing, no way in hell he is the answer for kesler.

Hope that's not what they're banking on, seeing as you can't send injured players to the minors.

I wouldn't have minded if we hadn't been able to sign Higgins, but now we have both?

That 2.25 million would have been way better spent on getting an actual top 6 forward.

Another move better be in the mix...

35 games last year, 76 before that, and 19 before that. Don't we have enough injury prone guys? And now we sign one more for 2.25m? This is the kind of signing you make for 1m or something.

Nothing wrong with adding depth. I'd prefer Brunette at $2mil, but a lot of people seem to forget that the players have the ultimate choice in where to play.

This team made it to Game 7 of the SCF, and it turns out we were riddled with injuries in the process. Pretty damn good. There's no reason to completely change our line-up. I'd rather keep the same gameplan than switch it up and hope the chemistry stays.

It's also July 1st. The regular season begins in 3 months. Reading some of these posts makes me think it's the night before the season opener. Gillis can still make trades/offersheets. The UFA pool sucks this year and you people are actually expecting a major change today? Give me a break.

Of course he would have been an asset, a player is better than no player. But he's not a big asset, he's an aging speedster with injury issues that is not a playoff performer.

A step up and down from Torres in many ways.

I wonder if Langenbrunner is available. Leadership, and put up 61pts just a season ago.

canucks are obviously thinking more than just this year. If they Canucks signed everyone that fans wanted this team would be up against the cap for the next ten years like the Flames. It's easy to rid yourselves of a bad 1 or 2 year deal. It's next to impossible to get rid of a bad five or six year deal. If Sturm stinks you ditch him in the minors when Raymond comes back. If Leino stinks you're stuck with him for 5 more years at 4.5 a year.
