Svboda on 93.7

Hopefully this will be linked up on their page later

After about a minute of nonsensical jibberish, he says (paraphrasing)
"...it was never about the money....it was about where he felt he had the best chance to succeed and win"

Starkey asked to the effect of "So the opportunity there is better than playing with Crosby and Malkin?"

"He felt it was the best fit"

As if that wasn't bad enough-

When asked if Philly's offer was the highest...

"I won't say who, but we had an offer in the high $6's"

Starkey "Is that for 2 years?"

"No...one season"

(John Seibel says "So he didn't want to play for the Panthers?", Svboda pretty much dismissed talking more about it)

Edit:

Linkage

He went for the money, I'm 100% sure.

At least the drama is over, now we can go on and focus on winning the cup .

Nobody offered him 6M+, that's him just trying to say Jagr is not about the money. I bet Flyers offered him the most.

As a side note -- man did Rossi ever **** up with this whole ordeal. If you're going to use anonymous sources to say there's already a deal between the sides, how about making sure you're actually right?

Yup. Not that he was incredibly credible before this.

Omsk of the KHL may have have offered upper 6 mil. which probably why he can't/won't say who.

Only a better fit if he has to be the main attraction.

I think Sullivan if healthy is less distraction than Jagr and a good trade-off for Talbott. We did OK

What did you think he was going to say?

"Well I played hardball with two of the leagues better GM's who then in turn told me to look else where, and then when else where was Florida I went to the only team willing to dish out a 3.3 million for a 40 year old headcase that has been playing in the worlds fourth best league for the two years."

I wanted Jagr ..bad. But after the way this went down, its a HUGE blessing he didn't sign. Is there any doubt he would have been a disruption?

1. We all know we didn't "need" him in order for us to compete for a cup. We wanted him on the team considering the history involved.

2. The fact that he goes to Philly over the Wings and Pens tells me he still wants to be the main guy. He wouldn't have been that in Detroit, and wouldn't have in Pitt . Philly loses Carter and Richards..have a bunch of young guys, so he goes there .

3. Lets say he didn't have any other offers, and basically chose the Pens because of that. We are all happy we get him( right now) but then we have to deal with the distractions in the season. He could have caused some serious problems in the locker room and on the ice. We already had enough bad luck last year, causing us a chance at the cup, we don't need another year of us missing out because of Jagr possibly not getting along with Crosby or whoever.

The more I think about this, the more I am glad we dodged a bullet.

However, the sad thing is there were still a lot of people who liked Jagr, including myself. Who didn't really care about the situation in the past, considering what our team was doing back then anyways( getting rid of everyone). However is now forever tarnished in Pitt.

That's a good point. He probably got an offer for 6 from Russia and to save at least a little grace didn't want to get back on a flight hat in hand.

May I ask what leagues you consider to be the 2nd and 3rd best?

I would say with the AHL is better and I think the KHL and Swedish Eilite league are similar. So you could say the third best behind the NHL and AHL but you would have trouble convincing me that the KHL is better than the AHL. Granted they do have elite NHL talent like Radulov and Jagr but as a league I think the AHL is better depth.

There is no way he was a better fit on that team than the Penguins.

Like I said, that tells me he wanted to be the main guy. He would have been not only 2nd, but 3rd on both the Pens and Wings. Some things never change.

Svboda says Jagr went to the best team he thought had a chance to win a cup. I'm sure the Pens will take that into consideration come playoff time. We all know what happened with the last guy who thought that.

Fair enough. It's hard to compare the North American game to the European one too. I think both the KHL and Elitserien have better "talent", but the AHL could be a little more "competitive." North American hockey emphasizes doing whatever it takes to win, playing physical, crashing the net, et cetera and the European game is more focused on skating and passing and making plays. The NHL is obviously the best by far, offering better skill and physicality than either, but I don't think it's fair to say the KHL is worse than the AHL. You could probably argue pretty convincingly that they're equal, though.

I think the current ranking in Europe is something like:

KHL
SM-Liiga
SEL
Extraliga

I would think that you could make a case for any of those leagues being better than the AHL.

Man, I'd like to have a tap on Mario's phone if ever Jagr tries to call him... That would be very interesting.
