James PAtrick retires and is added as "skills" coach.

Does this mean Rick Martin won't be back?

Sad to hear. I'm happy that we retained him on our staff though.

With luck, the skills-coaching is primarily beating Soupy and Jillson about the head and shoulders until they learn defense.

Well Done, JP... Cheers to one of more respectable plumbers out there.

Hopefully he gets a chance to show the youngsters how a real workout is done as a coach... maybe even teach 'em some yoga.

Great guy. Its fortunate you guys will retain him on the team, at least behind the bench. Patrick had a great work ethic I am sure that was a selling point to put him on the bench.

Good solid long career. Glad he is with the Sabres in a coaching position. He will be valuable there.

Still need a D-Man with the McKee situation up in the air

Ideal place for Patrick to go. Good luck to him and now Buffalo needs to draft a few young defensemen.

Thanks for everything Jeep.... and about 3 more years than we expected.

See? This organization can treat someone well, it's not just a rumor.

Ta,

The Buffalo News refers to his new position as a "developmental assistant"

Patrick's new role will emphasize instruction for the organization's defensemen. He won't be behind the Sabres bench during games, but could be on the headset upstairs.
I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him putting the uniform back on. Depending on the circumstances, and providing he doesn't file formal retirement papers, he could be signed to a player contract and added to the roster at the trading deadline when the roster limits are removed.

With the new CBA don't all players have to be signed by December 1?

No, that deadline only applies to Group II free agents.
