me too. Stoked about this deal. Salo is probably one of the most underrated players we've ever had.

One year to keep Weber's #6 warm for him.

Just in: Salo suffered an "upper body injury" while signing his contract. Out 4 months, minimum.

Well, that looks to set out defence in for next season:

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Salo
Ballard-Tanev
Alberts-Rome

looks like a downgade on last year for sure, but barring a trade, i guess that's what it'll be.

Talk about taking less to play on this team. I don't think Salo has really lost a step, just hope for a healthy season.

Great to have Sami back at a good price. Now just don't play ball hockey... better yet just stay in bubble wrap until the season opener.

Amazing. That's potentially the best value per dollar signing of the day, granted an easy one for Gillis. Very glad to have Sami back.

he's still a very smart valuable player, and fantastic bang for the buck at this price. but it seems pretty evident that he has in fact, 'lost a step'.

LOL

We have to do these all season.

'Salo suffers serious shoulder injury while storing his luggage in the overhead compartment. Out for 2 months.'

'Salo to miss 8 games with lower jaw injury. Overcooked steak to blame.'

Surprised Salo signed for such a low amount. Good on him for taking a true discount.

Yep, a downgrade for sure. Some of the sting will fade if Ballard can find his game again, and Tanev continues on his trajectory. Definitely more 'ifs' this year (so far).

Lost a step in what form? You could argue a bit for his skating, but he still moves around faster and better than Rome. He still played top 4 in the playoffs and did not look out of place. He didn't look like he lost a step on his shot or on the PP; still a threat on the 2nd unit. And still had the 2nd most PK TOI on the team. I think in that sense, he hasn't really lost a step.

He signs exactly the type of contract we all hoped he would sign.

Well, this deal is good ONLY if Ballard is kept and continuously improves and becomes an imprtant player. Cuz we alll know Salo will have injury time and during that time, the defense corps without a good Ballard in the top 4 looks awful weak.

If Ballard is kept and for whatever reason he doesnt get good icetime, whether thru his own fault or just cuz coach doesnt like him, then this Salo deal is awful.

Giving up a fairly healthy Hoff for a fragile Salo? Just to save 2 mil a year?

Only works if Ballard turns out well.

Salo was looking for a two year deal. He sayshe wants to play more than just this season.
"When I came back in February, the body felt good and I felt I could keep going on for sure for a few more years. I was trying to get a two-year deal but I was really happy with getting a one-year deal.

"We'll see how I feel after the year."

Its definitely a downgrade, but at no point in the regular season do I recall us ever icing a fully healthy defense. There are ways in which this defense can be better than last season (regular season), providing that they are healthier, Ballard starts playing like he has his entire career outside of Vancouver, and Edler brings his game to another level. However, the unit is definitely worse on paper and has a lot more "ifs" to it than last year. Hopefully Gillis makes a move to upgrade the forward ranks to soften the blow to the defense.

That's the reason I think we'll be okay.

I understand that injuries are part of the game but if we can stay relatively healthy on the back end I think we'll be okay.

With Ehrhoff what we lost was an insurance policy to some extent. If Edler stays healthy then the loss of Ehrhoff won't be as significant IMO. I think it does make an impact but when you compare our team to the rest of the west I think we're looking good.

I think it's safe to say that unless we get hit real hard by injuries we'll win the NW division again.

Outside of the NW division here's a list of my contenders:

1. San Jose-very strong top six up front and top four on back end. Not sold on goalie
2. LA-very strong down the middle, very solid defence and good in goal
3. Chicago-very strong top 4 up front, very strong top 2 on back end, questionable in goal. Good potential overall but not sold that they are better then us.
4. Detroit-just like us didn't replace their top four defencemen but there's still time.

Here's a list of my potential contenders:

1. Anaheim if Hiller is good to go and their defence can play well
2. St. Louis if they can stay healthy and get a strong push from their young kids

Here's my list of playoff contending but that's about it:

1. Nashville-always in the thick of things and they'll be real good defensively
2. Calgary-should be in the thick of things
3. Columbus-still not sold on their defence though but should be a playoff contender

Here's my list of bottom feeders:

1. Phoenix-poor goaltending
2. Minnesota
3. Edmonton
4. Colorado
5. Dallas

At this point if I had to predict I would say it's going to be Vancouver, San Jose and LA battling it out for top spot in the West with Chicago and Detroit just a small step behind.

Agree. The offence doesn't look like an upgrade, either, but it's still early days.
