Players don't care about cap hits, they care about how much they're actually making EACH year. You could easily front load his contract and tell him "after about 8-10 years we'll take a look at where each party stands, and we can extend you or move you"

edit: that being said, I see a .0005% chance of signing him now that Richards is off the market.

Stamkos is still going to be earning way more than 5.575m in 8-10 years no matter who he signs with.

Stamkos isn't that dumb. He is not so shortsighted that he would take 10 million this year if it means he'd make 2 million 5 years from now.

None of the other examples of free agents taking those contracts apply to him. He is 21 years old, most of the others were in their 30's. When they sign a 10-15 year contract, they know there is no way they are playing till the contract expires, so what they're making in the final years doesn't matter because they'll be retired anyway. Stamkos on the other hand will likely play out his contract. He is leaving a ton of money on the table by accepting a deal like that.
