Eh, if he's healthy, he's not a bad consolation prize at that amount of money for the Leafs.

Klak also said this signing reeks of desperation.

Burkie is so predictable it's not even funny.

Ok well it's kinda funny.

Well, they have the space and it's only 2 years, so it's not a HORRIBLE signing.

Still, he's the BR consolation prize, he's always injured and that team's fanbase expect them to compete despite the fact that they have one of the worst rosters in the NHL. Yeeeeeah... that's not going to end well.

I'm not even surprised at any deal from what we saw yesterday, but yikes this guy is an injury waiting to happen.

If Erik Cole got 4.5m, this signing isn't that bad. Especially since it's only for 2 years. The guy is a legitimate 2nd line center if he stays healthy. Maybe different trainers will help?

Connolly to the Leafs was totally predictable. Decent playmaker when healthy. He'll help them, but not enough for them to make any kind of noise.

The Connolly signing is solid term...eh, on the cap hit.

If he's healthy, he's good for 55-65 points, but that's a pretty big "if". Still, it was a must move for the Leafs. They now have two top-6 caliber NHL centers, never thought I'd see the day:

Lupul-Connolly-Kessel
MacArthur-Grabovski-Kulemin

Not exactly the greatest top-6 in the world, but better than they've had for quite a few seasons now. They should be able to at least compete for 7th-8th in the East, although I wouldn't pencil them in for anything.

I'm going to guess that the Devils are going to sign Kaberle or, probably more likely, Ian White.

At best, they're the 10th best team in the conference on paper. I think there is a pretty clear divide in the East between the top teams and the bottom, and they are clearly in the bottom half.

That's where I'd peg them. If Phaneuf and Connolly have a bounceback, they should at least be able to push for a spot, but I don't expect it. I'd have the conference like this right now:

Elite:
Pittsburgh/Boston

Very above-average:
Washington

Above-average:
NYR/Philly/Buffalo

Average:
Montreal/Carolina/New Jersey

Below-average:
Toronto/Winnipeg/NYI

Lottery:
Florida/Ottawa

Don't think Boston should be in the elite tier at all. Just because they won the cup doesn't make them the best team in the conference and I don't think TT will repeat his performance. I'd put them with Washington.

So is Vancouver the best team in the West, are they guaranteed to go to the Finals again? Are the Habs better than Pittsburgh and the Caps?

Elite until proven otherwise? No, I never thought they were elite in the first place. You don't have to be elite to win the Cup.

Agree. They won the cup. They are the model for Elite right now. Regardless of how it went down. They won 16 games in the playoffs.

Agreed about the separation.

I don't exactly know what will happen to Philadelphia, but I expect them to still compete even if they aren't nearly as good.

Florida, Ottawa (?) and Winnipeg don't really have a chance.

Toronto, Carolina, and I guess Long Island, are going to struggle greatly even if they have a only small chance of getting in the playoffs.

Locks are: Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, and Tampa Bay.

New Jersey will most likely be New Jersey of old.

Buffalo and New York will get in too.

Montreal is going to have a tough time getting a playoff spot this year in my opinion.

Just out of curiosity, has there ever been a time where there were no canadian teams in the playoffs?

Yes, I would consider Vancouver the best team in the West, until proven otherwise. The Sharks could give them a run for their money, but I think Vancouver man-handling them in Round 3 showed who the superior team was -- although adding Burns is a huge coup.

Winning the Cup is different than going to the ECF or WCF -- if the Habs won the cup last year, they were the best team in the league. It's that simple. Boston is better than 29 other teams as it stands.

So is Pittsburgh not elite because they've gone out in the first two rounds twice in a row?

Just don't personally agree with that line of thinking. Different strokes for different folks.

I disagree. Look at how they won the Cup. In 3 different series it took them 7 games to win. They won the Cup because they won a lot of big games, not by dominating their competition and not losing a lot of games.

Washington, Philly, and Pitt all won more regular season games, and Tampa won just as many. I see no reason to think Boston will top the conference in wins this season.

That's the main thing. I wouldn't care if it took 16 double overtime wins to get it, they won. They are elite.

So are we elite because we won the season series?

I think if anything it shows you you DON'T need to be elite to win the Cup.
