That isn't what I'm arguing; I'm arguing that they are an elite team. If winning the cup doesn't make you an elite team, then what the hell does?

I think if anything it shows you you DON'T need to be elite to win the Cup.
I seriously do not get your logic.

It's ridiculous. What do the Bruins have to do to become elite? Win 5 more cups?

Maybe then I believe the notion of distinguishing between "elite" teams and "very good" teams in the NHL doesn't work, I guess.

I think you can absolutely distinguish between the good and the bad. Past that it's all fair game, IMO.

How don't you understand? It's simple. I don't think winning the Cup makes a team elite. Were the Canes elite after they failed to make the playoffs when they won the Cup the previous year?

It's simple, calm down. I'm not personally attacking you or anything, I just don't think winning the cup is the best way to decide if a team is elite or not.

In any case, I would have Boston pegged as the de facto division winner for 2011-2012. Montreal could make a push, but they can never seem to stay healthy, and without Gomez playing at least to his usual levels, they have next to no depth at center, unless Eller could break out with a 45-55 point season next year.

Why aren't the bruins elite? Best goalie, best defenseman, solid group of forwards, good coach, etc. I have no clue on why they aren't one of the elite teams in the NHL.

And they had that ALL last year...but nobody considered them elite, but because they won the Cup they are?

I guess you can say I think using elite to describe teams is dumb. I think they're very good, but won't be any better than what I imagine 1-5 in the Eastern Conference looking like at the end of next regular season.

I agree. I like Buffalo's signings but I don't think they're enough to make them do much better than Boston.

Like I said in the expectations thread:

Top level in the East: PIT, WSH, TB, BOS

Next group: NYR, NJ, PHI, BUF

Significant dropoff: MTL, CAR, TOR

Cellar: NYI, WPG, FLA, OTT

You're elite if you win the cup, that is all. No other words can explain it.

It's ridiculous how stacked the top 8 is.

I would have MTL over NJ.

NJ's forward lines have depth and skill, but their defense is horrific, and they don't even have a coach yet. I can't really peg them as anything more than average at this point, and I definitely think the Rangers, on paper, are the superior team. It also depends on if Brodeur can keep his play up from the end of last season, as opposed to how he was playing to start the year.

Alright but just recently they were 1st in the East. 2008-09 season they were an elite team.

They don't have a top center either. It's basically Zajac and Zubrus

Sather: Not going to pursue high-priced left winger to play with Richards.

Sather: "I know Gabby is excited that Brad is here. He shouldn't be carrying the puck, but getting in the holes."

Wow, Sather is actually breaking something down intelligently. I agree.

It's Zajac, Zubrus, Elias, and Steckel.

I have high hopes for Josefson myself, but yeah, they could use another proven top-6 center.

If you mean something that's one huge sexual innuendo is intelligent...

Kidding kidding. I agree. Surprise Sather still understands hockey at all.

Wehhh.

We need a second liner to play with Anisimov and Callahan at the least, then.

Sather not concerned about 9-year deal: Richards is "tremendous athlete, in great shape, a workout fiend..." references Recchi in playoffs

NYDNRangers Jesse Spector
Tortorella and Richards both psyched for reunion.
