Would you give Richards the "C"?

I would. Just like we gave the messiah the "C" when we got him from the Oilers.

Nope.

It's not his team, he's a part of the puzzle.

Better to give it to someone who understands what it's like to be a Ranger.

No, the C goes to Cap'n Cally. I would actually do what the Rangers did in '94 and give out 3 As.

C - Callahan
A - Dubinsky
A - Staal
A - Richards

I'd give it to Callahan or Staal.

Callahan IS our Captain, did you see Rupps comments yesterday?

Not unless Callahan, Staal, and Dubinsky vanish into thin air in that order.

Captaincy isn't a player thing, it's a team thing. Experience with the team is key, and experience as a player away from the team isn't nearly as important.

I haven't seen Rupp's comments before. Love it. And to answer the question, Cally gets the C.

Yeah it would be dumb to give it to Richards not that he isn't capable but just let him come play hockey.

That'd send a bad message to the core of this team.

This is Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, and Henrik Lundqvist's team. Give him an "A", fine. No "C".

I wouldn't be against giving him an A. The A was made for guys like Richards; guys who are experienced and natural leaders, but are new to the team. Sorta like when we gave Shanny an A, or how Pronger got the A on Philly.

I honestly think even A should be earned.

I'd say nothing on his first year here.

I love Cally, Staal and Dubi but I just don't think those guys have the body of work that BR has (conn smyth, won the Cup, more experienced, etc). Nothing against Rupp but to me, it's more important who a vet like Gabby would respect more in the dressing room. I can't see Cally delivering a speech like Mess before an elimination game.

Nope. Richards has leadership qualities, but not like Messier. He wasn't wearing the C in Dallas and I don't think it makes a great impression to your room to just hand the C to a guy whose new in town. Plus it's just added pressure on Richards to perform in NY and I think we're better off just letting him do his thing, lead as much as he wants to and not throw extra expectations on the pile. We want him to put up 80+ points a year. If he does that, we'll be happy, whether he plays a big leadership role or not.

C - Dubi/Cally
A - Cally/Dubi
A - Staal/Richards

The main difference between this signing and the Drury/Gomez signings is that Richards isn't being brought in to make this his team. He may be the star but he's a complimentary player for our current core.

Build, build, build, add when ready.

C comes from what you do on the ice... Not the name on the back of your jersey.
