So, one of the main keys to our success this year depends on the health of Gagne.

And if and when Gagne does go down, one of Parse/Lokti/Clifford/Richie needs to step it up.

That is how depth works in a cap era. Get used to it.

That was when Parse was LW2. Parse will be LW3 and Clifford will be LW4.

Then Muray will shuffle the deck and we will get new lines for the second game.

Somewhat.

We still have enough money to sign or trade to upgrade our wings.

Depends on Doughty's terms. I'm sure there will be a veteran depth signing or trade, but I don't expect a major move unless Dean is blown away with an offer, a la Richards.

Forgot Parse. I still think we need a 3rd line RWer unless we plan on using Toffoli or Lewis there.

Short term, good cap hit. I like it. I hope he stays healthy, he finished strong in the playoffs.

We may have to wait around for arbitration and then more negotiating etc... This won't go how Dean planned.

I am more worried about nature of those injuries. I believe that most hockey players would have played with some of those "injuries." I hope he stays out of trouble and that he... mans up a bit. Seems like every time his temperature raises by 0.2 degrees, he goes into a panic mode and makes a "If I never see you again..." phone call to his family.

You misunderstand what I meant. I was not arguing that the Kings could get a player in trade for the $3.5M. I was saying that the $3.5M, in conjunction with the other space they will have under the cap, the Kings could go out and get a $6M player in trade. With $3.5M dedicated now to Gagne, that would leave them with only $2.5M left, under this example. I would rather trade for that $6M player than dedicate $3.5M of it to Gagne.

Yes, I know, there may not have been anyone out there available in trade. I just would have preferred the trade to the signing because I am not expecting big things out of Gagne.

Trades for players like Carter and Richards are extremely rare. The Kings and Dean were in perfect position to strike and got it done. Expecting it to happen again is just crazy.

Who do you think is available with a $6 million cap hit? Rolston?

Doesn't happen with 100% certainty, but it happens more often than not. For every Selanne and St. Louis, there are dozens that tailed off tremendously. What makes Gagne more like Selanne than the dozens of others? Right now, for Kings fans, shear hope and that's it. I only preach caution that everyone should keep expectations in check.

The $6M was purely an example to illustrate the point. My fantasy was Parise, but with this signing, it makes a trade like that almost an impossibility.

I'm not at all worried about Gagne's age but only his injuries.

Age really is irrelevant more often than not.

Not at all, NJ would need a top six in return. Penner would be included in the deal.

I doubt they take Penner. His trade value is at the lowest point it has been in his career. I think he will have to have a bounce-back year before anyone will want him in trade. But if NJ is willing to take him in the package you suggested in the other thread, i think everyone here would do that trade in a heartbeat. I love Bernier, but you gotta give to get. If that trade happened (unfortunately, still just a fantasy), then I will dance in the streets. Gagne signing? Nice, but I've seen it before.

For what it's worth, with the Devils "electing" arbitration with Parise (if it gets that far), they will be unable to trade him this season anyway. The *only* way the Kings had any hope of trading for him is for the Devils to agree to a contract with him before his arbitration date.

The more likely scenario, providing Parise doesn't play this season on an arbitrator's contract, is that the Kings make a bid for him at the deadline. At which point his cap hit can still be easily absorbed by the Kings.

Gagne for two years (with Penner and Mitchell coming off the books next summer) was a *perfect* FA addition for the Kings this summer.
